Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising method to treat organic matter. However, AD performance was limited by the inefficient electron transfer and metabolism imbalance between acid-producing bacteria methanogens. In this study, novel binary electroactive material (Fe3O4@biochar) with pseudocapacitance (1.4 F/g) conductance (10.2 μS/cm) exploited store-release electrons as well enhance direct methanogens during process. The mechanism of pseudocapacitance/conductance on mediating interspecies deeply studied at each stage AD. hydrolysis acidification stage, Fe3O4@biochar acting acceptors proceeded NADH/NAD+ transformation promote ATP synthesis 21% which supported energy for organics decomposition. methanogenesis helped microbes establish (DIET) increase coenzyme F420 content 66% then improve methane production 13%. complete experiment, generated from were rapidly transported via conductors. Excess buffered pseudocapacitor gradually released alleviated drastic drop in pH. These findings provided strategy anaerobic treatment guided design materials.

Advancements in biological wastewater treatment with sustainable and circularity approaches have a wide scope of application. Biological is widely used to remove/recover organic pollutants nutrients from diverse spectrum. However, conventional processes face challenges, such as low efficiency, high energy consumption, the generation excess sludge. To overcome these limitations, integrated strategies that combine other physical, chemical, or methods been developed applied recent years. This review emphasizes advances for treatment, focusing on their mechanisms, benefits, prospects. The also discusses potential applications towards green resource recovery, along low-carbon fuel production. methods, viz., bioremediation, electro-coagulation, electro-flocculation, electro-Fenton, advanced oxidation, electro-oxidation, bioelectrochemical systems, photo-remediation, are summarized respect non-genetically modified metabolic reactions. Different conducting materials (CMs) play significant role mass/charge transfer aid enhancing fermentation rates. Carbon, metal, nano-based CMs hybridization different provide favorable conditions fermentative biocatalyst trigger activity overcoming limitations process. emerging field nanotechnology provides novel additional opportunities surmount constraints process enhanced waste remediation valorization. Holistically, promising alternatives improving efficiency effectiveness while contributing circular economy environmental protection.
