The lack of fresh water has accelerated efforts to improve the current treatment technology for reclamation wastewater. Simultaneous heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (known as SND) nitrogen removal drawn increasing attention due its' high efficiency low cost. Comparing with traditional removal, SND process can achieve simultaneous within a reactor unit. Despite considerable strains isolation from various environment, application its influencing parameters, mechanism are poorly elicited represent major challenges in basic study application. review begins an update on state knowledge functioning is followed by engineering applications associated key impact parameters study. advantages shortcomings also concluded provide theoretical technical support practical optimization. following topics highlights discussion metabolic pathway SND, including most recent discovery novel oxidase dnfA (oxidizes hydroxylamine N2) strain, Alcaligenes sp. HO-1. Finally, recommended future directions related strategies proposed. Specifically, paper proposed using multi-omics strategy. Understanding will help us apply more efficiently
