The addition of granular activated carbon (GAC) enhanced the performance up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating blackwater at 35 °C. DNA were extracted from and biofilms attached to GAC submitted for shotgun sequencing. In addition, acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) quantified. Diverse partners direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) enriched in or biofilm (GAC-biofilm) amended UASB. Pedosphaera parvula, Syntrophus aciditrophicus Syntrophorhabus aromaticivorans dominant syntrophs. analysis type IV pilus assembly genes further suggested DIET may be functioned through GAC-biofilm, while conductive pili aggregates. AHLs quantification quorum sensing (QS) related indicated higher QS activity population level was induced by GAC. Overall, work illustrated different patterns, that played an important role controlling USAB.
