Pretreatment processes - recognized as critical steps for efficient biomass refining have received much attention over the last two decades. In this context, deep eutectic solvents (DES) emerged a novel alternative to conventional representing step forward in achieving more sustainable with both environmental and economic benefits. This paper presents an updated review of state-of-the-art DES-based applications biorefinery schemes. Besides describing fundamentals DES composition, synthesis, recycling, study comprehensive existing techno-economic life cycle assessment studies. Challenges, barriers, perspectives scale-up are also discussed.

Microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent (DES) has received attention as an ultrafast pretreatment method in lignocellulose fractionation. This study investigated the improvement of milled softwood mixture (MSM) fractionation with chlorine chloride-formic acid (ChCl:FA) to obtain residues high glucan retention and purity while removing majority lignin hemicelluloses. At optimum conditions i.e., ChCl:FA (1:4), 140 °C, 14 min, 800 W 15 % (w/v), 96.2 hemicellulose removal, 90.1 delignification 93.5 were achieved. About 85 was recovered a 95 when solid loading 10-20 (w/v). showed that microwave assisted suitable means fractionate MSM achieve quality at loading.
