Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) incorporating air-breathing cathodes have emerged as a promising eco-friendly wastewater treatment technology capable of operating on an energy-free basis. However, the inevitable biofouling these devices rapidly decreases cathodic catalytic activity and also reduces stability MFCs during long-term operation. The present work developed novel microbial separator for use in that protects activity. In modified devices, microbes preferentially grow rather than surface such is prevented. Trials showed this concept provided low charge transfer mass diffusion resistance values oxygen reduction reaction 4.6 ± 1.3 17.3 6.8 Ω, respectively, after prolonged maximum power density was found to be stable at 1.06 0.07 W m-2 throughout test chemical demand removal efficiency increased 92% compared with value 83% exhibiting serious biofouling. addition, cathode combined demonstrated less cross-cathode anolyte. This effect indirectly induced growth electroactive bacteria produced higher currents MFCs. Electroactive biofilms (EBs) engage in complex electron transfer and storage processes involving intracellular extracellular mediators with temporary capabilities.
