Pretreatment processes - recognized as critical steps for efficient biomass refining have received much attention over the last two decades. In this context, deep eutectic solvents (DES) emerged a novel alternative to conventional representing step forward in achieving more sustainable with both environmental and economic benefits. This paper presents an updated review of state-of-the-art DES-based applications biorefinery schemes. Besides describing fundamentals DES composition, synthesis, recycling, study comprehensive existing techno-economic life cycle assessment studies. Challenges, barriers, perspectives scale-up are also discussed.

Lignocellulose is the main component of plants and has a wide range sources. The high-value production lignocellulose lies in biorefinery lignin, cellulose hemicellulose. advantages disadvantages traditional pretreatment methods were summarized, effective parameters listed. As green solvent system with excellent performance, deep eutectic solvents (DES) are considered to be most potential biomass system. Based on this, new trend progress DES reviewed, focusing effects distinct kinds raw materials, components DES, reaction conditions assisted by microwave ultrasound lignocellulose, recyclability solution was discussed. Finally, application development direction proposed prospected.
