Abstract Due to the limitations of conventional ultrafiltration/microfiltration-based membrane bioreactors (UF/MF-MBRs) in removing trace organic compounds (TrOCs), concept high-retention (HR-MBRs) was introduced. Despite benefits, HR-MBRs still suffer several drawbacks. Therefore, this paper critically reviews effectiveness and feasibility proposed strategies alleviate fouling, salinity build-up incomplete biodegradation TrOCs during wastewater treatment by HR-MBRs. The severity each challenge is compared amongst various configurations together with associated capital operational expenditure determine most cost-effective set-up. Guidance provided on and/or lessons that could be adopted from well-established processes used at municipal scale. Chemical cleaning as mitigation for fouling degrades membranes leading poor removal, while pre-treatment surface modification increase (OpEX). However, there are other environmentally-friendly pretreatment options which hold great potential future application. These such advanced oxidation (AOPs) discussed work. Further, in-depth discussion made pros cons approaches (such frequent sludge withdrawal, intermittent UF/MF filtration using salts) salt build-up. Finally, rejected bioreactor transfers problems toxic pollutants management.
