Biological nitrogen removal is a classic technique for removing from wastewater that has been studied extensively and gives high rate, energy efficiency, relatively environmentally benign. Using biological processes to treat the diverse components of requires thorough understanding microorganisms pathways involved. However, information regarding participating in remains limited. This review presents current knowledge researches into these microorganisms, including ammonia oxidizing bacteria, archaea, complete oxidation nitrite-oxidizing anaerobic ammonium denitrifying heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacteria. The metabolic enzymatic reactions involved cycle abovementioned are demonstrated. key enzymes, functional genes, removal-related were discussed. Additionally, advantages different oxidation, denitrifying, HN-AD described. ABSTRACT The growth and nitrogen metabolism of heterotrophic nitrification‐aerobic denitrification (HN‐AD) bacteria are affected by nitrite, but the mechanisms underlying this for strain Acinetobacter johnsonii EN‐J1 unclear. In study, addition 10 mg/L nitrite increased reduction rate ammonium 1.0 mg/L/h, 20 nitrate 3.9 mg/L/h. Compared with control, reductase activity, electron transfer adenosine triphosphate content were enhanced 142.0%, 278.0% 279.0%, respectively, in removal process after nitrite. whole genome was annotated genes such as narGHI , narK nsrR nirBD nasA glnA gltB gdhA amt . Transcriptome analysis showed that triggered significant upregulation several key pathways, including metabolism, tricarboxylic acid cycle, amino enhancing denitrification. expression ( narG hmp ) detected real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. These results suggested enhances increasing genes, levels, which is important elucidating mechanism promotion biological efficiency.
