Biorefineries (BRFs) that process the organic fraction of municipal solid waste and generate bioproducts bioenergies have attracted attention because they can simultaneously address energy environmental problems/needs. The objective this article was to critically review microbial production hyaluronic acid (MPHA) its profile for integration into a GBAER-type BRF (a type based on wastes) identify economic sustainability aspects modified would confirm it as sustainable option. It found MPHA by selected strains pathogenic Streptococci moderate high, although trend work with genetically transformed (GT) (innocuous) bacteria is gaining momentum. We identified several knowledge gaps must be addressed regarding scale-up, industrial production, feasibility sustainability, MPHA.
