The lignin derivatives generated during pulping might be responsible for the suboptimal performance of anaerobic reactors treatment wastewater. However, exact mechanisms by which these exert influence remain unclear. This study investigated derivatives, simulated using humic acids (HAs), in granular sludge (AnGS). Compared to enzymes present floc-bonding and granule-bonding, HAs impeded conversion unhydrolyzed substrates into methane caused considerable inactivation free enzymes. Simultaneously, suppressed agglomeration weakened strength AnGS. Furthermore, calcium ions helped maintain integrity structure.
