The partial nitrification–anammox process offers a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally sustainable approach for nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment. However, its application under low ammonia conditions faces operational challenges including prolonged start-up periods excessive nitrite oxidation. This study employed strategy combining polyurethane surface positive charge enhancement zeolite loading to develop carrier capable of microbial enrichment inhibition nitrate generation, aiming initiate the nitrification-anammox sequencing batch reactor. Operational results demonstrate that modified enabled reactor achieve total efficiency 78%, with effluent reduced 6.03 mg-N/L, successfully initiating process. also exhibited accelerated biofilm proliferation (both suspended attached biomass increased). Additionally, 16S rRNA revealed higher relative abundance typical anammox bacteria Candidatus Brocadia compared original carrier, alongside decline nitrifying genera, such as Nitrolancea. These shifts effectively suppressed oxidation, limited accumulation, sustained efficient throughout reactor’s operation.
