Earthworm gut digestion plays a crucial role in reducing antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during vermicomposting, offering significant potential for controlling ARG dissemination livestock manure. However, the impact of residual tetracycline antibiotics on this process remains poorly understood. Herein, study systematically evaluated three concentrations (0, 10, and 100 mg/kg) dynamics microbial community evolution 35-day vermicomposting cattle The results demonstrated that earthworm intestinal effectively eliminated over 96% initial load raw Noticeably, stress significantly enhanced total abundance casts (p < 0.05), with distinct response patterns observed among different types. Mechanistic analysis revealed potentially persistence through two pathways: (1) promoting horizontal transfer via mobile genetic elements, (2) altering succession influence host–microbe relationships. These discoveries contribute to our comprehension interference vermi-remediation processes provide insights optimizing mitigation strategies contaminated

Sewage sludge is among the richest reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) that may spread to urban environment. Further investigation warranted for removal sludge-borne ARGs in large-scale vermicomposting systems. Under this scenario, there necessity unveil role widely-used earthworm species Eisenia andrei, since current body literature mostly focuses on E. fetida. The present study sought evaluate changes and mobile genetic elements a pilot-scale vermireactor presence andrei response both gut- cast-associated processes (GAPs CAPs, respectively), by coupling high-throughput quantitative PCR Illumina sequencing. After gut transit, large decreases relative abundances number conferring major classes, including some specific classified as potentially high risk human health, were recorded fresh casts. Likewise, encoding heavy metals about nine-times lower egested materials than initial sludge. Genes coding integrases or insertional sequences also exhibited reduced abundance result GAP CAP processes, suggesting vermicompost appears be less prone horizontal gene transfer untreated These findings provide evidence capacity diminish ARG during vermicomposting, reinforcing its potential bioremediation purposes transforming quantities waste into an improved fertiliser. This crucial propel technology forward achieve transition toward net zero-waste process.
