The widespread use of artificial sweeteners in foods, drinks, and pharmaceuticals has led to rising concentrations wastewater, with specific raising concerns due demonstrated toxicological risks ecosystems humans. To date, a comprehensive summary the occurrence, distribution, removal status wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) is lacking, making it difficult evaluate associated environmental impacts. We conducted systematic review scientific literature grey rigorous screening covering 24 countries 6 continents. Globally, sucralose, acesulfame, saccharin, cyclamate are prevalent WWTP, 0.6-303.0 µg/L influent 0.1-81.2 effluent. Sucralose showed obvious increasing over time United States Canada, an increase 5.6-5.7 µg/L·y 4.7-5.5 Summer usually contains 11.1-33.3 % higher than other seasons. Saccharin most easily removable (>90.0 removal) followed by acesulfame (25.0-70.1 %) sucralose (-10.0-10.0 %). Wastewater processes longer HRT more diverse microbial communities better performance removal, while aerobic conditions saccharin anaerobic processes. Increasing trends for persistent have been observed globally, suggesting potential evolution/adaptation. This contributes understanding spatiotemporal distribution ever-evolving biodegradation providing future perspectives policy requirements.
