Photodynamic Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (PACT) has received great attention in recent years since it is an effective and promising modality for the treatment of human oral skin infections with advantage bypassing pathogens’ resistance to antimicrobials. Moreover, PACT applications demonstrated a certain activity inhibition eradication biofilms, overcoming well-known tolerance sessile communities antimicrobial agents. In this study, 13 diaryl-porphyrins (mono-, di-cationic, non-ionic) P1–P13 were investigated their potential as photosensitizer anti-Staphylococcus aureus. The efficacy was evaluated through photo-inactivation tests. Crystal-violet staining combined viable count techniques aimed at assaying anti-biofilm activity. Among tested compounds, neutral P4 better than cationic ones, irrespective corresponding binding rates. particular, active inhibiting biofilm formation impairing viability adherent planktonic populations 24 h old biofilm. inhibitory also efficient against methicillin resistant S. aureus strain. conclusion, diaryl-porphyrin family represents reservoir compounds photodynamic pathogen preventing biofilms that cause many become chronic.

Orthopedic implants are a boon for devastating bone diseases such as osteoarthritis and fractures. However, implantation of an orthopedic device is associated with the risk bacterial biofilm formation on surface implant. Treating biofilm-associated infections extremely challenging owing to acidic environment, enzymatic degradation, presence sessile cells, hypoxic environment in biofilm. Biofilms highly resistant both antibacterials human immune system. Present antibiotic therapies have limited success due low blood flow, high density, poor permeability causing insufficient permeation antibiotic. Nanoparticles surface-to-volume ratio superior penetration across cell membranes, their nanostructure provides flexibility designing effective strategies tackle infection. This chapter summarizes various research endeavours which nanoparticles been explored prevention or/treatment biofilms implants.
