Nitrogen removal in the sewage treatment process is a significant challenge. The increase nitrogen content leads to eutrophication of water bodies and deterioration quality polluted environments. Therefore, converting into non-polluting gases crucial essential part process. Compared physical, chemical, physicochemical methods, biological denitrification not only simple operate economically effective but also has less secondary pollution saves energy. This paper summarizes latest research progress on mainstream technology WWTPS (wastewater plants) discusses its background, methodology, challenges. It noted that traditional method stable widely used, it drawbacks such as high costs long reaction times, especially high-nitrogen-load wastewater where effectiveness limited. short-cut nitrification–denitrification suits high-nitrogen-loading low C/N ratio reduces carbon source consumption. However, problems fluctuation unstable dissolved oxygen still need be solved. anaerobic ammonia oxidation efficiently converts nitrite using ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, consuming energy facing limitations due slow bacterial growth rates stringent environmental conditions. heterotrophic nitrification–aerobic merges traits nitrifying bacteria aerobic denitrifying effectively reducing ecological footprint enhancing efficiency. approach pivotal focus for future endeavors.
