Longitudinal studies indicated that basic mathematical skills (e.g., arithmetic operations) are a significant predictor of understanding fractions, which itself is critical for later academic and life prospects. However, it still unclear whether the other forms rational numbers, such as percentages, also predicted by particularly predictions reflected in data from intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs). Therefore, we leveraged large-scale dataset (2,798 students; working on 4.1 million problems) an ITS to predict percentage based (i.e., arithmetic, measurement units, geometry) fraction understanding. In first step, observed advanced geometry, well significantly Closer inspection second step was best problems with similar features word problems, fraction/natural number multiplication/division problems). Together, our results point practitioners software developers consider revision specific subtopics share students who face difficulties percentages.

Research on fostering learning about percentages within intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) is limited. Additionally, there a lack of data‐driven approaches for improving the design ITS to facilitate percentages. To address these gaps, we first investigated whether students' understanding basic mathematical skills (eg, arithmetic, measurement units and geometry) fractions an predicts their We then applied psychological network analysis evaluate interdependencies data 44 subtopics concepts, leveraged large‐scale dataset consisting 2798 students using bettermarks working approximately 4.1 million problems. found that advanced units, geometry fraction significantly predicted percentage understanding.
