Abstract Benefitting from ultra‐high porosity, large specific surface area (SSA), and rich active sites, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a star material in energy environment related applications, especially photocatalysis. In comparison with conventional photocatalysts, MOFs can be customized terms of electronic structure, photo‐responsiveness, morphological dimensions by rational design, which means that eliminate the need for other species to achieve enhanced photocatalytic performance, such metals, compounds, polymers, may introduce extra costs, time‐consuming, multi‐phase, or an unclear mechanism. Most previous review works MOF photocatalysis mixed self‐tuning assisted‐tuning, often gives incomplete understanding. this work, self‐tunning analyzing component (as clusters, ligands, inclusions), defect (defect engineering, linkers, oxygen vacancies (OVs), crystal facets, dimensions, amorphization) is summarized. Then, outstanding examples these strategies applied water redox, CO 2 /N reduction, organic conversion, environmental treatment are discussed. Increasing water pollution and decreasing energy reserves have emerged as growing concerns for the environment. These pollutions are due to dangerous effects of numerous pollutants on humans aquatic organisms, such hydrocarbons, biphenyls, pesticides, dyes, pharmaceuticals, metal ions. On other hand, need a clean environment, finding alternatives fossil renewable fuels is very important. Hydrogen (H2) regarded viable promising substitute fuels, range methodologies been devised generate this particular source energy. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) new generation nanoporous coordination polymers whose crystal structure composed juxtaposition organic inorganic constituent units. Due their flexible nature, regular structure, high surface area, these materials attracted much attention removing various from wastewater, splitting. MOFs Z-scheme heterojunctions identified an economical eco-friendly method eliminating wastewater systems, produce H2. Their low-cost synthesis unique properties increase application in environment fields. The possess diverse properties, exceptional making them ideal degradation separation. development formulation photocatalytic system using MOFs, which stable potent redox capability, has successful approach addressing environmental shortages recent times. A novel doubly interpenetrated indium-organic framework of 1 has been assembled by In3+ ions and highly conjugated biquinoline carboxylate-based bitopic connectors (H2L).
