Abstract Global energy and environmental problems are becoming increasingly prominent, the shortage of freshwater resources has been plaguing many countries regions in world. Solar steam generation (SSG) emerged as a green, low‐cost efficient strategy for production, which attracted enormous attention recent years. Furthermore, various photothermal materials structural designs preparation SSG systems have widely reported. Among them, metal‐based abundant, exploration on is one important research directions. In this review, basic concepts design objectives current first introduced, well advances development materials, including mechanisms, methods. The evaluation criteria system further described. Then summarized terms design, functional modules (light absorption, thermal management, water transport, salt rejection, etc.), potential applications (wastewater treatment, sterilization other fields). Finally, main challenges future prospects practical emphasized.
