Anaerobic electrochemical membrane bioreactor (AnEMBR) is to combine anaerobic with technology. Elucidating the mechanisms of methane production kinetics and fouling under electric field has been an area intense research interest in AnEMBR. In wastewater treatment resource recovery, AnEMBR proven as a promising technology especially overcome technical limitations confronted by conventional AnMBR system. For example, rate can be 20–50% faster external voltage less than 1.0 V into that without field. Efficient mitigation also achieved using concepts electrostatic interactions between foulants conductive or electrode materials. this review, fundamental aspects control systems are discussed critical review emphasizing reactor configurations, selection electrode/membrane materials, operating parameters. Furthermore, impacts processes on microbial activity underlying mechanism occurring discussed. The effects alterations community performance energy recovery from AnEMBRs examined. Finally, suggestions current faced provided. Cutting-edge data presented study great potential broaden focus translational transdisciplinary studies innovative for sustainable recovery.
