Abstract Ribavirin (RBV) is a quintessential antiviral medication frequently detected in wastewater. However, the impact of RBV on biological treatment wastewater has rarely been reported to date. This study investigates influence enhanced phosphorus removal process by controlling influent concentration and elucidates underlying mechanisms. The results indicated that low concentrations ribavirin (below 0.05 mg/L) did not significantly affect EBPR efficiency, while exceeding 0.1 mg/L reduced chemical oxygen demand (COD) soluble orthophosphate, with higher exposure leading poorer performance. High decreased organic matter sludge its settleability. At an 2.0 mg/L, volume index increased, but volatile suspended solids 3.25 ~ 3.41 g/L. Exposure increased content extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), more significant increase EPS content, notably protein. specific uptake rate microorganisms, amounts resulting pronounced decrease (SOUR). also promoted release reactive species lactate dehydrogenase, reducing microbial metabolic activity.
