Inflammation is an integral part of animal biology. It provides critical protection from adverse environmental factors by enforcing the defense homeostasis and functional structural integrity tissues organs. Recent advances have uncovered a broad range biological processes that involve inflammatory control, calling for renewed framework inflammation beyond its classical roles in infection injury. In this Review, new perspectives on biology are discussed research directions suggested to address fundamental gaps our current understanding.

Abstract The molecular processes underlying human health and disease are highly complex. Often, genetic environmental factors contribute to a given or phenotype in non-additive manner, yielding gene–environment (G × E) interaction. In this work, we broadly review current knowledge on the impact of interactions health. We first explain independent variation environment. next detail well-established G E that involving toxicants, pollution, viruses, sex chromosome composition. conclude with possibilities challenges for studying interactions.

Emerging evidence supports a link between environmental factors—including air pollution and chemical exposures, climate, the built environment—and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission disease 2019 (COVID-19) susceptibility severity. Climate, pollution, environment have long been recognized to influence viral infections, studies established similar associations with COVID-19 outcomes. More limited links exposures COVID-19. Environmental factors were found through four major interlinking mechanisms: increased risk of preexisting conditions associated severity; immune system impairment; survival transport; behaviors that increase exposure. Both data methodologic issues complicate investigation these relationships, including reliance on coarse surveillance data; gaps in mechanistic studies; predominance ecological designs. We evaluate strength for environment–COVID-19 relationships discuss actions might simultaneously address pandemic, determinants health, health disparities.

The concept of the exposome was introduced over 15 years ago to reflect important role that environment exerts on health and disease. While originally viewed as a call-to-arms develop more comprehensive exposure assessment methods applicable at individual level throughout life course, scope has now expanded include associated biological response. In order explore these concepts, workshop hosted by Gunma University Initiative for Advanced Research (GIAR, Japan) discuss exposomics from an international multidisciplinary perspective. This Global Perspective is summary discussions with emphasis (1) top-down, bottom-up, functional approaches exposomics, (2) need integration standardization LC- GC-based high-resolution mass spectrometry untargeted analyses, (3) design study, (4) requirement open science workflows including spectral libraries public databases, (5) necessity large investments in infrastructure sequence exposome, (6) precision medicine nutrition create personalized environmental profiles. Recommendations are made key issues encourage continued advancement cooperation exposomics.

Abstract The epidemiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has undergone considerable shifts since its emergence in the Western world over a century ago, especially last few decades, with increasing global burden disease. IBD incidence continues to rise developed countries all age groups which is contributing compounding prevalence. Further, rising sharply Asia and other recently developing countries. In this review, we discuss implications changing trends epidemiology. First, patterns provide insights into causes, as they occur concurrent environment, cultures, attitudes. Understanding impact environment on risk can help towards prediction prevention strategies. Second, must prepare healthcare systems for address it at various levels improving outcomes health, overall.
