Abstract Heterogeneity has been a hot topic in recent educational literature. Several calls have voiced to adopt methods that capture different patterns or subgroups within students’ behavior functioning. Assuming there is “an average” pattern represents the entirety of student populations requires measured construct same causal mechanism, development pattern, and affect students exactly way. Using person-centered method (finite Gaussian mixture model latent profile analysis), present tutorial shows how uncover heterogeneity engagement data by identifying three unobserved clusters. This chapter offers an introduction model-based clustering includes principles methods, guide choice number clusters, evaluation results detailed with code real-life dataset. The discussion elaborates on interpretation results, advantages as well it compares other methods.

The use of digital learning technologies and platforms has skyrocketed over the past decade. Although materials have many advantages, using them can be frustrating to students. Frustration is a negative achievement emotion that serve as barrier learning. Therefore, understanding how frustration influences student attitudes toward technology help create more engaging effective experiences. Previous research identified three areas with academic e-textbooks (e-text frustration): (1) interactions e-text interface, (2) technical difficulties, (3) curriculum integration. This study investigated relationships among motivational, cognitive, attitudinal, academic, demographic factors impact e-texts in undergraduate biology classes. Extraneous cognitive load motivation significantly predicted each constituents. Surprisingly, intrinsic failed predict frustration. makes an important contribution education by examining settings emotions. Its implications are relevant for educators, researchers, developers environments.
