Predictors of the Intention to Stop Using Smart Devices at Bedtime Among University Students in Saudi Arabia: Cross-Sectional Survey (Preprint) DOI

BACKGROUND The widespread use of smart devices, particularly among university students, has raised concerns about their impact on sleep quality. Bedtime usage devices is associated with disruptions and poor OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the behavioral perceptual factors influencing students’ intention stop using at bedtime in Saudi Arabia. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted June 2024 distributed via social media platforms students (aged ≥18 years). questionnaire collected data demographics, device habits, perceived negative effects sleep, physical disturbances. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index used assess Path analysis performed evaluate relationships between outcome variables, intended usage, 3 latent variables: quality smartphone effects, during past month. Model fit assessed chi-square, comparative index, root mean square error approximation. RESULTS Of 774 participants, 90.43% (700/774) reported every night 72.48% (561/774) believed negatively affected them next morning. most frequently next-morning symptoms were fatigue or drowsiness (480/774, 62.01%). Common purposes for staying touch friends family (432/774, 55.81%), entertainment (355/774, 45.86%), filling up spare time (345/774, 44.57%). Overall, 58.26% (451/774) expressed an within months. demonstrated that frequent nightly (path coefficient=0.36) after-lights-off (0.49) positively stop, whereas spending ≥3 hours (–0.35) engaging multiple activities (–0.18) had associations. strongest predictors well-being (0.71) difficulty breathing comfortably (0.64). excellent (comparative index=0.845 approximation=0.039). CONCLUSIONS Perceived disturbances are strong Interventions improving hygiene should focus raising awareness addressing behaviors such as late-night heavy screen time. Abstract Electronic devices such as smartphones have become a primary part of young people's lives. Fear missing out seems to influence the ability set boundaries around sleep time. This study aims explore (1) use electronic media in pre-sleep time, quality sleep, anxiety, and well-being females males’ university students UK Spain, (2) whether students’ fear (FoMO) is associated with higher usage at night-time by gender. A cross-sectional, quantitative design through Qualtrics.com was used. Samples were formed N = 159 British participants, 172 Spanish. Zusammenfassung Die voranschreitende Digitalisierung birgt neben all dem Positiven auch Gefährdungen für Kinder und Jugendliche wie zum Beispiel Gaming Disorder, Cybermobbing, Onlinesexsucht oder Cybergrooming. Diese digitalisierungsbedingten Störungen, aber die intensivierte Nutzung digitaler Medien allgemein können den Schlaf von Kindern Jugendlichen negativ beeinflussen. Eine Kombination aus Verhältnis- Verhaltensprävention ist notwendig, um dieser negativen Entwicklung effektiv entgegenzuwirken. Für eine effektive Verhältnisprävention Mitarbeit der Entwickler Anbieter medialer Angebote sowie Unterstützung auf politischer Ebene unerlässlich. Im Sinne einer es wichtig, Ressourcen zu stärken, Kontextfaktoren miteinzubeziehen Erziehungsberechtigten Hilfestellungen klare Empfehlungen anzubieten. Kinderärzte Allgemeinmediziner sollten verstärkt Problematik sensibilisiert werden. vorhandenen Interventionsmaßnahmen zur Kontrolle Bildschirmnutzung mit Ziel, Schlafqualität verbessern, weisen zumeist nur kleine Wirkeffekte auf. Verfügbarkeit Inanspruchnahme Behandlungsangeboten nimmt zu. Aussagekräftige Evaluationsstudien Effektivität Interventionen sind erforderlich.

Gaming is a global phenomenon often associated with impaired health and sleep patterns. Although the research activities are growing, evidence to date rare due various gaming titles inconsistent study designs. Thus, this aimed examine impact of excessive in evening on subjective as well objective parameters by focusing specific game assessing several evenings/nights using mixed-methods approach. A total 33 experienced young male adults (23.00 ± 3.53 years old, ranked players League Legends or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive) took part. The individuals' were assessed via diary actigraphy. In randomized order, one week apart for duration 120 min each, two evenings spent gaming, while other without digital media but instead watching nature documentary. No significant difference between conditions found (p > 0.05) either nor quality. Daytime sleepiness was significantly increased after documentary movie, when compared < 0.001).
