Arsenic (As) poisoning in groundwater has become one of the greatest environmental concerns around world. In this study, As concentration samples (depth: 52–70 m) southwestern Bangladesh was evaluated using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) to know current status, possible source(s), and probable health risk As. addition, other relevant water quality parameters (pH, temperature, EC, TDS, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, HCO3−, Fe, Mn) were also measured various instruments such as portable bench meter, Flame photometer, AAS, Ion Chromatograph evaluate suitability for drinking irrigation purposes. (μg L−1) ranged from 13.10 292 (mean ± SD: 156.9 100.31), which is alarmingly, 15 times higher than WHO recommended value water. pH values collected 7.17 8.09, exhibits a lightly alkaline nature. The average abundance major cation follows order Ca2+ > Mg2+ Na+ anions HCO3− Cl− NO3− with Ca2+and being dominant anion, respectively. Based on assessments utilizing index entropy index, region interest not suitable or Piper tri-linear diagram suggests type study area Ca-HCO3 type, where Ca are principal cations anions, A bivariate analysis different hydro-chemical revealed that silicate weathering controls hydrogeochemical processes groundwater. Principal component hierarchical cluster indicate geogenic origin under reductive dissolution processes. moderate correlation between As, Mn FeOOH MnOOH plays vital role releasing sediment Probable cancer assessment both adults children 10−6 according United Nations Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), suggesting people at high carcinogenic risk.

Abstract Assessing groundwater quality is critical to regional water resource conservation and human health safety, especially in areas with co-existence of toxic constituents fluoride (F − ) arsenic (As). In this study, fourteen samples were collected Feng County, Northwestern Jiangsu Province identify dominant contaminants their spatial distribution risk. The composition variation characteristics major ions (K + , Na Ca 2+ Mg Cl SO 4 2− HCO 3 NO trace elements As, Mn) analyzed. hydrochemical results revealed that high F was mainly distributed the northern whereas As-riched primarily southern areas. Notably, over 85.7% 21.4% shallow exceeded drinking standard 1.5 mg/L for 10 µg/L respectively. Based on index (WQI) appraisal result, 71.4% study area classified as “poor”, thus unsuitable directly. We assessed non-carcinogenic risk (HQ Fluoride As Arsenic carcinogenic (CR ). calculated hazard quotient (HQ) indicated nearly all have an unacceptable > 1) each age group. However, HQ values 28.6%, 21.4%, posed potential risks infants, children, females, males, CR showed 0%, 28.6% 1.0 × −4 irrigation suitability assessment doubtful irrigation, owed magnesium hazards. findings will assist policymakers formulating proper remedial policies mitigation strategies ensure safety water.
