The widespread occurrence of microplastics (MPs) has resulted in their interaction with biological processes. Thus, there is a great concern about the potential toxicity MPs on animal and plant cells possibility that reach humans through food web. In order to shed light both issues, laboratory assays were performed for evaluating effects polyethylene (PE) microparticles aquatic Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleid. gammarid Echinogammarus veneris (Heller, 1865). Moreover, stock MP-treated plants was used feed individuals, presence MP particles digestive tracts analyzed. Results evidenced lack toxic plants, evaluated at growth physiological level by biometric parameters, pigment content, photosynthetic performance estimated chlorophyll fluorescence imaging ETPT (EcoTox Photosystem Tool). Only slight reduction pigment-related indices observed. A remarkable genotoxic effect instead highlighted Comet assay hemocytes individuals exposed MPs, three times more DNA damage (expressed as Tail Moment) compared control ones. Finally, gut content gammarids fed revealed 7.6 particles/individual, highlighting trophic transfer among freshwater ecosystem organisms. Novel indications impact PE compartment are provided. Notably, between primary producer consumer organisms chain associated ingestion such issues web leading human diet.

Microplastic (MPs) pollution has become a subject of environmental concern due to its wide ubiquity in the environment. Microplastics are possible sources other hazardous chemicals aquatic organisms their composition and sorption properties. In this study, MPs occurrence water sediment samples Plankenburg River, Western Cape, South Africa was investigated. The physicochemical characterization river done onsite. 30 L were collected filtered 10 triplicates through 250 μm mesh onsite using metal bucket. An additional 12 sample 4 20 laboratory. extraction from laboratory by density separation. Sediment also at selected sites, oven-dried microplastics Sampling conducted over four seasons - spring, summer, autumn, winter. classified visual observation Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR). seasonal distribution surface varied across all sites. However, spring had highest (5.13 ± 6.62 MP/L) least, autumn (1.52 2.54 MP/L). observed (1587.50 599.32 MP/kg). Fibres most dominant microplastic particle type (shape), with size range 500-1000 different infrared spectroscopic analysis confirmed polymer be polyethylene. This study provides an understanding River system gives baseline for future monitoring assessment African freshwater systems.

Microplastics (MPs)─i.e., plastic particles less than 5 mm in length─are becoming a growing environmental concern due to their potential ecotoxicological impacts on aquatic ecosystems. In India, MPs contamination is significantly problem increased production as well its low rate of recycling. As result, research work India has gained considerable attention the last two decades. The objective this study conduct comprehensive review existing scientific literature freshwater ecosystems (e.g., lakes and rivers) India. A bibliographical search was used across number databases including ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, ResearchGate. We found that comparison marine ecosystem source, transport, fate are still underexplored, we only 18 relevant papers. This reveals there no standard procedure for separating from water sediment samples, comparing results challenging task. larger (>500 μm) sediments were identified most commonly using attenuated total reflection (ATR) Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy technique (ATR-FTIR), whereas smaller-sized (<500 FTIR fitted with confocal microscope, also known μ-FTIR imaging or chemical imaging. white-colored fibers fragments polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), (PE) common polymer types Although momentum over past decade, limited understanding impact MPs' weathering patterns, role biofouling, hyacinths services Furthermore, fluxes Indian oceans not constrained, atmospheric transport high-altitude mountains, which have already been made fragile by climate change, fully investigated. study, therefore, calls additional assessments ecosystems─particularly central parts
