Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) present a new threat to the marine environment, and it is vital understand interactions possible toxicity CEC mixtures once they reach ocean. CECs— such as metal nanoparticles, nanoplastics pharmaceuticals— are groups contaminants some which have been individually evaluated, though their still not fully understood. Reproduction also essential ensure healthy prosperous next generation, however, population dynamics may be at danger if reproduction hindered result exposure CECs, leading an negative impact on biodiversity. This study aimed effects silver (20 nm nAg, 10 µg/L) polystyrene nanoparticles (50 nPS, µg/L), well 5-fluorouracil (5FU, ng/L) mixture (10 µg/L nPS + nAg ng/L 5FU) in gonads Mytilus galloprovincialis. A multibiomarker approach, namely antioxidant defence system (ADS; superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, – S transferase activities), oxidative damage (OD; lipid peroxidation) were analysed mussels. Mussel ADS was overwhelmed by reactive oxygen species generated CECs. Individual resulted OD all cases, but mussels exposed Mix, increased 57-fold. When interact potentially more hazardous than individual components, so pose major species. model applied data synergistic or antagonistic interactions. An interaction between these CECs observed, synergism encountered after 3 days due OD. However, observed Mix-exposed mussel mainly 5FU nPS.

Among personal care products, quaternium-15 is prominently featured as a preservative in items such shampoos, soaps, shaving and cosmetics. The widespread use of these products people's daily routines contributes to release into aquatic ecosystems. In this context, the primary aim study was assess physiological cellular responses digestive gland gills Mytilus galloprovincialis exposure. Cell viability ability cells regulate their volume were evaluated. Additionally, expression genes involved oxidative stress response assessed further substantiate compound's harmful effects. Results indicated significant decrease both RVD (regulatory decrease) capacity when exposed hypotonic solution. Furthermore, impairment cell function corroborated by modulation stress-related gene expression, including SOD, Cat, well Hsp70 CYP4Y1. Similar alterations observed gills, reflecting impaired functionality vital organ well. summary, outcomes provide conclusive evidence toxicity quaternium-15. This underscores urgent need investigate toxicological effects contaminant on ecosystems emphasises necessity limiting containing

The marine environment has numerous impacts related to anthropogenic activities including pollution. Abundances of microplastics (MPs) and other pollutants are continuously increasing in the environment, resulting a complex mixture contaminants affecting biota. In order understand consequences, review studies analyzing combined effects MPs types bivalves been conducted as species this group have considered sentinel bioindicators. Regarding reviewed, histological analyses give evidence that can be located haemolymph, gills gonads, well digestive glands intestinal lumen, epithelium tubules, demonstrating entire body is affected by MPs. Moreover, DNA strand breaks represent most relevant form damage caused enhanced production reactive oxygen response exposure. role vectors ability polymers adsorb different compounds also highlighting high variability results. sense, toxic associated exposure were found significantly increase with co-presence antibiotics or petroleum hydrocarbons amongst pollutants. addition, bioaccumulation processes (PAHs, metals others) Histological, genetic physiological alterations reported damages, degree harm seems correlated concentration size MP type pollutant.

However, fipronil may influence non-target species as a result of the contamination aquatic ecosystems. The present study aimed to investigate acute sublethal effects freshwater mussels (Unio delicatus), species, with physiological, antioxidant action mechanisms histopathological observations. 96-h LC50 value was found be 2.64 (1.45–4.56) mg/L. Sublethal concentrations were applied at 1/10 1/5 0.264 mg/L 0.528 for 48-h 7-d. Haemolymph samples, digestive gland gill tissues taken after exposure times. The assessment and prediction of the toxicity engineered nanomaterials (NMs) present in mixtures is a challenging research issue. Herein, three advanced two-dimensional (TDNMs), combination with an organic chemical (3,4-dichloroaniline, DCA) to two freshwater microalgae (Scenedesmus obliquus Chlorella pyrenoidosa), was assessed predicted not only from classical mixture theory but also structure-activity relationships. TDNMs included layered double hydroxides (Mg-Al-LDH Zn-Al-LDH) graphene nanoplatelet (GNP). DCA varied type concentration TDNMs, as well species. exhibited additive, antagonistic, synergistic effects. There linear relationship between different levels (10, 50, 90%) effect concentrations Freundlich adsorption coefficient (KF) calculated by isotherm models energy (Ea) obtained molecular simulations, respectively. model incorporating both parameters KF Ea had higher predictive power for combined than model. Our findings provide new insights development strategies aimed at evaluating ecotoxicological risk NMs towards pollution situations.

Introduction Mollusks play a significant role in marine ecosystems and have economic value for aquaculture. Sometimes, unexpected unexplained mortalities among mollusks been described. The of potential pathogens such as viruses remains unknown due to the lack molluscan cell cultures, which is one major drawbacks determining viral mortalities. Several oceanographic studies suggested high abundance oceans. Virus identification understanding interaction with organisms are their infancy. Metatranscriptomics could become useful tool identify using shotgun approach growing number genomes sequences deposited public databases. Methods In this work, several bioinformatics approaches were set up screen Mollusca RNA find confirm traces transcriptomes. This meta-analysis included an extensive search SRA datasets belonging available NCBI database, selecting total 55 that further analyzed searching sequences. Results Twenty-two bivalves, 19 cephalopods 16 gastropods from geographical origins 17 different tissues considered. domain was most productive method virus showed Cephalopoda samples ( Idiosepius notoides Amphioctopus fangsiao ) exhibited highest identifications. A similar toxicological profile for + AMI exposure was found most evaluated endpoints, comparing single exposure, showing that presence did not modulate However, behavioral assessment showed a different pattern hypoactivity (NPls – hyperactivity; no effect). effects between were also in protein contents (antagonism) total glutathione content (synergism). This highlights complexity unpredictability pharmaceuticals, important an accurate risk developing effective strategies interventions against plastic pollution.
