The review article explores the state-of-the-art advancements in using bioreactors based on microalgae to detoxify wastewater, with an emphasis removal of various environmental contaminants (VECs). Because their persistence and capacity for bioaccumulation, these pollutants—which include nutrients, heavy metals, organic compounds, microplastics, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), emerging contaminants—pose serious threats environment human health. The extensive application of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) has resulted in its worldwide detection waters, leading to risks human health and ecology safety. Presently, various remediation techniques for NNIs have been developed. However, the critical reviews concerning approaches elimination from water are limited. Considering tremendous efforts made research topic removal recently, this study systematacially reviewed current advances on approaches, including adsorption, Fenton, ozonation, photodegradation, sulfate radicals based-advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), electrochemical AOPs, percarbonate-based periodate-based microbial remediation, phytoremediation. One of the major threats to freshwater biodiversity is water pollution including excessive loads nutrients, pesticides, industrial chemicals, and/or emerging contaminants. The widespread use organic pesticides for agricultural and nonagricultural (industry, gardening, etc.) purposes has resulted in presence their residues various environments, surface waters. However, contribution deterioration ecosystems (i.e., decline ecosystem functions impairment) remains uncertain. Once aquatic environment, metabolites can interact with microbial communities, causing undesirable effects. existing legislation on ecological quality assessment bodies Europe based chemical biological indicator species (Water Framework Directive, Pesticides Directive), while are not yet included monitoring programs. In present literature review, we analyze 20 years (2000-2020) research provided by microorganisms ecosystems. We describe set investigated these studies range endpoints used establish causal relationships between pesticide exposure responses. focus addressing effects at environmentally realistic concentrations community level inform relevance ecotoxicological assessment. Our review highlights that most were performed using benthic organisms autotrophic heterotrophic communities often studied separately, usually testing target main component herbicides autotrophs fungicides heterotrophs).
