SUMMARYThis narrative review and meta-analysis summarizes a broad evidence base on the benefits-and also practicalities, disbenefits, harms personal, sociocultural environmental impacts-of masks masking. Our synthesis of from over 100 published reviews selected primary studies, including re-analyzing contested meta-analyses key clinical trials, produced seven findings. First, there is strong consistent for airborne transmission severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) other pathogens. Second, are, if correctly consistently worn, effective in reducing diseases show dose-response effect. Third, respirators are significantly more than medical or cloth masks. Fourth, mask mandates overall, community Fifth, important symbols; non-adherence to masking sometimes linked political ideological beliefs widely circulated mis- disinformation. Sixth, while much that not generally harmful general population, may be relatively contraindicated individuals with certain conditions, who require exemption. Furthermore, groups (notably D/deaf people) disadvantaged when others masked. Finally, risks environment single-use respirators. We propose an agenda future research, improved characterization situations which should recommended mandated; attention comfort acceptability; generalized disability-focused communication support settings where worn; development testing novel materials designs filtration, breathability, impact.

The production and consumption of disposable face masks (DFMs) increased intensely during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a high amount them being found in terrestrial aquatic environment. main goal this research study is conduct comparative evaluation water-leachability microplastics (MPs) chemical additives from various types surgical/medical (MM DFMs) filtering pieces (FFPs). Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy was used for MPs analysis. Liquid Chromatography/High Resolution Mass Spectrometry analyse analytes presented water-leachates DFMs. FFPs released 3-4 times more microplastic particles compared MM release into water all tested DFMs without mechanical stress suggests potential MP contamination originating DFM process. Our first time identified bisphenol B (0.25-0.42 μg/L) 1,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (163.9-115.0 as leachables vary size, with predominant <100 μm, order MMIIR > MMII FFP3>FFP2>MMI. type leachates investigated polypropylene, accounting 93-97% 82-83% FFPs. Other polymers such polyethylene, polycarbonate, polyester/polyethylene terephthalate, polyamide/Nylon, polyvinylchloride, ethylene-propylene copolymer were also identified, but smaller amounts. wider variety higher percentage (17-18%) other (3-7%). Fragments fibres water-leachate samples, fragments, particularly debris polypropylene fibres, most common morphotype. findings are important contributing additional data develop science-based policy recommendations on health environmental impacts associated originated

Abstract This paper provides a comprehensive review on microplastic from source to sink and reviews the current state of knowledge topic by focusing articles published within last five years identification, quantification, analyses, effects microplastics soil aqueous environments. Microplastics are materials formed either degradation plastic into smaller micro sized particles or obtained directly in daily products such as cosmetics, toothpastes, domestic cleaning products, etc. Hence, origin is primary secondary source. The lack information research conducted compared water influenced many disparities. These include variations defining conclusive methodologies analysis which therefore lead gaps identification comprehension pollution soil. effect different aquatic vertebrates, mammals, humans studied and, most cases, various negative were observed organism’s physiology. In addition innovative control methods, there growing focus exploring bioplastics potential substitute for traditional plastics. Numerous studies suggest that environmental impact more manageable with production use bioplastics. Nonetheless, additional needed confirm viability solution. Graphical abstract

The period from 2019 to 2022 has been defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in an unprecedented demand for and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). However, disposal PPE without considering its environmental impact proper waste management practices become a growing concern. increased during pandemic associated have analyzed. Additionally, discussion around treating these residues exploring more environmentally friendly alternatives, such as biodegradable or reusable PPE, is crucial. extensive predominantly non-degradable plastics led their accumulation landfills, with potential consequences marine environments through formation microplastics. Therefore, this article seeks establish connection between issues Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing importance efficient aligned sustainable development objectives address emerging challenges ensure future.

Coagulation is a widely employed technique for removing suspended particles from water and wastewater, recently, it has gotten attention as popular method the removal of microplastics (MPs). Studies on coagulation-based MPs are still in their infancy, few findings available about this treatment approach, its mechanism, efficiency. Given these gaps, study was designed to comprehensively investigate recent advances via coagulation. The influence various experimental factors such coagulant type, dose coagulant, pH solution, shape critically reviewed. showed that optimizing environmental conditions during coagulation process crucial improving reducing energy costs. efficiency depends optimal reaction conditions, which may vary depending type concentration characteristics or wastewater being treated. Optimizing is, therefore, critical achieving maximum More extensive research required reveal mechanisms controlling floc density pollutants effluent. Consequently, current review aims highlight gaps challenges associated with techniques treatment. Current advancements synthesis chemical modification bio-based coagulants performance could constitute paradigm shift ecosystem protection sustainability. use eco-friendly combining other suggested increase efficacy viability method. This will provide significant insights field researchers, guiding future investigations contributing advancement knowledge.
