Microplastic pollution has become a global concern, with potential negative impacts on various ecosystems and wildlife species. Among these species, ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) are particularly vulnerable due to their feeding habits proximity aquatic environments contaminated microplastics. The current study was designed monitor microplastic (MP) pollutants in the freshwater ecosystem of Panjkora River, Lower Dir, Pakistan. A total twenty (20) duck samples were brought up for four months 13 days banks river, no food intake outside river. When they reached an average weight 2.41 ± 0.53 kg, all sacrificed, dissected, transported ice box laboratory further analysis. After sample preparation, such as digestion 10% potassium hydroxide (KOH), density separation, filtration, identification, MP content counted. 2033 particles recovered from 20 mean value 44.6 15.8 MPs/crop 57.05 18.7 MPs/gizzard. MPs detected surface water 31.2 15.5 MPs/L. major shape types fragments crop (67%) gizzard (58%) fibers (56%). Other fibers, sheets, foams. majority size range 300-500 µm (63%) crops, 50-150 (55%) gizzards, while most 150-300 (61%). Chemical characterization by FTIR found six polymers. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) had greatest polymer detection rate (39.2%), followed polyvinyl chloride (PVC) (28.3%), high-density (HDPE) (22.7%), polystyrene (6.6%), co-polymerized polypropylene (2.5%), homopolymer (0.7%). This investigated presence microplastics crops gizzards ducks, well river water. results revealed significant pervasive occurrence both avian digestive systems surrounding environment. These findings highlight threat ecosystems, emphasizing need research effective mitigation strategies address this pressing environmental concern.
