Pesticides used in food production contaminate freshwater ecosystems. We present a critical analysis of pesticide use Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) from 1990 to 2020 systematic review scientific literature about presence pesticides freshwater, encompassing studies published 2023. Data were collected FAOStat, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Google Scholar. Brazil was primary user, with an annual consumption 231,621 t, followed by Argentina (132,255 t) Colombia (52,553 t). In 2020, LAC had highest rate application globally, Ecuador leading at 13.74 kg/ha. South dominates total amount 90.9% use, primarily herbicides (51.5%), while usage North Central America, as well Caribbean, varied due differing agricultural practices. The study examined 221 records for 26 out 51 countries literature, highlighting significant lack information numerous countries. Argentina, Mexico, publication rates. Rivers, streams, lakes (37%, 20%, 12%, respectively) most commonly studied systems, research focused mainly on concentration water (46%), sediments (27%), aquatic biota (15%). imbalance between monitoring freshwaters leads concerns awareness ecological risk. The extensive use of herbicides worldwide is, at present, a potentially harmful aspect to be included in environmental health risk analyses. Formulations auxinic containing 2,4-D, dicamba and MCPA, among others, are widely employed alone or combination with other agrochemicals. In this sense, significant concentrations these can found water bodies, inhabited by aquatic species, e.g., fish that for toxicological evaluation. the Pampas Region, different studies were performed evaluate lethal sublethal effects induced 2,4-D dicamba, several species. These included, Cnesterodon decemmaculatus (Cyprinodontiformes, Poeciliidae), Rhamdia quelen (Siluriformes, Heptapteridae), Poecilia vivipara Jenynsialineata Anablepidae) Leporinus obtusidens (Characiformes, Anostomidae). results obtained demonstrated compounds induce such as genotoxicity well behavioural, enzymatic, biochemical histological alterations, name few. observations highlight feasibility inducing detrimental on species inhabit highly cultivated area South America.
