Abstract Polypropylene (PP) disposable face masks (DFMs) are essential for limiting airborne infectious diseases. This study examines the behavior of DFMs under three scenarios: i) exposure to natural environment; ii) simulated high-energy aquatic environments through an abrasion test; and iii) incorporation into cement-based mortars. In weathering experiment, after 117 days, exhibited photodegradation, resulting in chemical alterations carbonyl hydroxyl groups. degradation led breakdown polymer release microplastics nanoplastics. Controlled tests, conducted a Denver ball with water, sand, ceramic balls 2 hours, confirmed that water is critical factor fiber from DFMs. These tests resulted 0.26 g PP fibers 20 (weighing 62 total) diameter µm. Weathering indicated rapid nanoplastics, underscoring importance pursuing actions like reuse. Ecotoxicological revealed leachates DFM-incorporated mortars showed no adverse effects on Daphnia magna or Selenastrum capricornutum, unlike reference mortar, which caused substantial toxicity magna. Incorporating promising potential, as by favorable ecotoxicity leaching test results.

In recent years, microplastics, especially marine microplastic pollution, have received global attention as a new type of environmental problem. The establishment accurate and efficient methods for the detection microplastics is basis in-depth research on transport, transformation, fate, ecotoxicological effects in environment. Microplastics seawater frequently mix with biological tissues, resulting challenges when identifying samples. However, commonly used pretreatment protocols often suffer from long digestion times, inadequate digestion, risk potentially damaging microplastics. This study compared efficiencies five reagents provided further insights into two advanced oxidation involving Fenton’s reagent an innovative alkaline K 2 S O 8 protocol based sulfate hydroxyl radicals. Using Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM−EDS), carbonyl index (CI) analyses, status after was evaluated. results revealed that method could enhance reaction efficiency while reducing potential functional group damage during pretreatment. Moreover, proposed applied to field samples, were effectively separated biologically rich Thus, provides effective way isolate contributes development efficiently monitoring valuable access reliable data fate inventory oceanic

Carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNMs), including graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), fullerenes, and nanodiamonds, are poised to revolutionize sustainable environmental applications. Graphene's unparalleled mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, thermal properties make it crucial for water purification energy storage. CNTs, with their exceptional tensile chemical stability, vital in pollution control conversion. Fullerenes, noted electronic high reactivity, excel remediation. Nanodiamonds offer hardness, biocompatibility, promising applications from soil remediation biomedical engineering. However, challenges such as toxicity, cost, scalability must be addressed. Future research should focus on overcoming these hurdles fostering interdisciplinary collaboration fully harness CBNMs solutions.

Organic compounds in different solutions have caused several pollution problems to the environment and even affected human health. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) been effectively used decontamination of these types compounds. Distinct reactive oxygen species (ROS) proposed explain degradation or mineralization contaminating organic matter. ROS, such as free radicals (e.g., .OH), superoxide .O2 −), peroxides H2O2), are capable modifying chemical structure matter consequently degrade mineralize it. In this review, formation hydroxyl each AOP, a hybrid process, methods for quantifying determining type radical discussed.
