Co-occurrence of Witnessing Intimate Partner Violence against Women and Experiencing Violence in Childhood in Refugee Settlements in Uganda
Abstract
Background:
Intimate
partner
violence
against
women
(IPVAW)
and
children
(VAC)
frequently
co-occur
within
the
same
households.
However,
little
is
known
about
co-occurrence
of
witnessing
IPVAW
experiencing
VAC
in
humanitarian
settings.
We
examined
prevalence
IPVAW,
its
association
with
a)
physical
emotional
perpetrated
by
a
caregiver;
b)
sexual
any
perpetrator;
c)
endorsement
norms
justifying
among
young
people
aged
13-24
years
Uganda
refugee
settlements.
Methods:
We
analyzed
data
from
first-ever
Ugandan
Humanitarian
Violence
Children
Youth
Survey
(HVACS)
conducted
March
to
April
2022,
involving
1,338
females
927
males
years.
Analyses
used
cross-tabulation
chi-square
test
estimation
multivariate
logistic
regression
model.
Results:
The
was
higher
(30.5%)
than
(19.0%).
For
both
males,
associated
an
increased
likelihood
reporting
(Females:
adjusted
odds
ratio
(AOR)
4.1;
95%
confidence
interval
(CI):
2.6-6.2
vs
Males:
AOR
4.1,
CI:
1.9-8.2),
caregiver
2.8,
1.8-4.4
2.6,
1.3-5.2)
compared
those
who
did
not
witness
IPVAW.
Unlike
females,
significantly
perpetrator
for
(AOR=
3.1;
CI=2.1-4.7),
endorsing

CI=1.4-5.9)
never
witnessed
Conclusion:
Coupled
caregiver-perpetrated
common
settlements
Uganda.
These
findings
underscore
need
synergize
gender-based
child
protection
sectors
develop
prevention
response
programming
around
intersecting
risk
factors
homes
similar
