Geothermal energy is a sustainable resource, specifically referenced as key resource in the Trump adminstration’s Declaring National Energy Emergency Executive Order 2025, that harnesses heat from Earth’s crust to provide continuous clean energy. Identifying suitable geothermal sites involves evaluating various geological and geographical factors ensure optimal extraction minimal environmental impact. This study evaluates potential South Southwestern US states with high concentration of abandoned fossil fuel infrastructure, tribal lands, HUBZones, or all three order evaluate how balance development, land rights, justice future systems. First, we used publicly available Geographic Information System (GIS) datasets identify areas are and/or have orphaned infrastructure. Then, leveraged GIS classify subsurface temperatures calculated much enhanced system (EGS) technology could produce these using methods literature. The analysis identified promising overlap existing infrastructure following states: Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, Arkansas, Oklahoma. These at least technical over 2300 GW 18,000 oil wells be converted into plants. contribute significantly nation’s renewable portfolio while simultaneously providing additional revenue opportunities remediation lands low-income communities by leveraging policies programs like Indian Purchase Preference (IEPP) Historically Underutilized Business Zone program (HUBZone), respectively.
