We investigated the factors underlying naturalistic action recognition and understanding, as well theerrors occurring during failures. Participants saw full-light stimuli of ten different whole-bodyactions presented in three conditions: normal videos, videos with temporal orderof frames scrambled, single static representative frames. After each stimulus presentationparticipants completed one two tasks - a forced choice task where they were given potentialaction labels options, or free description task, could describe performedin their own words. While generally, combination form, motion, temporalinformation led to highest for some actions form information was sufficient andadding motion did not increase accuracy. also analysed errorsin found primarily types. One type errors on semanticlevel, while other consisted reverting kinematic level body part processing without anyattribution semantics. elaborate these results context perception.

Co-speech hand gestures offer a rich avenue for research into studying emotion communication because they serve as both prominent expressive bodily cues and an integral part of language. Despite such strategic relevance, gesture-speech integration interaction have received less focus on its emotional function compared to cognitive function. This review aims shed light the current state field regarding interplay between co-speech emotions, focusing specifically role in expressing understanding others’ one's own emotions. The article concludes by addressing limitations proposing future directions researchers investigating gesture-emotion interaction. Our goal is provide roadmap their exploration ultimately contributing more comprehensive how emotions intersect.

Communicating emotions is crucial for the navigation of social life. Emotions can be expressed automatically as cues, but also via evolved signals that are communicated to a audience. Although audience effects on discrete emotion expressions have been attested in humans, inclusive examinations kinds facial movements influenced by presence (versus absence) an and compared across valence contexts scarce. Moreover, while most research focuses expressions, bodily components - notably gestures poorly understood. Using automated tracking algorithm, we first (part 1) identified N = 80 UK-based participants, produced watching amusing, fearful or neutral movie scenes either alone (alone condition) with another partner (social condition). We found amusing scenes, more so than led overall increase gesture movements, confirming these represent emotional responding. Furthermore, condition facilitated especially lower instead upper areas, well use, emphasizing their role signalling. By providing evidence specific regions gestures, our study (conducted 2020) fosters knowledge signalling undergoing selection communication, which discussed view nonhuman primate literature. Secondly 2), provided new database image video stimuli recorded naturalistic hope will promote ecologically valid data future.
