Drosophila subobscura is a Palearctic species that colonized the west coast of South and North America in last quarter 20th century. This stands out for its large chromosomal inversion polymorphism affects five long chromosomes. Studies natural populations revealed has an adaptive character while arrangement Ust was classified as adapted to cold, other arrangements, such U1+2+6 U1+8+2, were considered warm adapted. Characterization breakpoints will allow first approach genes included inversions find candidates be affected by selection. In this work, we take advantage existence reference genomic sequence carrying U1+2 locate U6 U8 inversions, mapping paired-end Illumina reads from two homokaryotypic strains respectively. To date, most characterized D. have been generated non-homologous end-joining. contrast, seem originated transposons, and, at distal breakpoint U8, describe new fold-back-like element characteristic suboscura group named Ziga-Zaga.

Abstract Determining the genetic architecture of traits involved in adaptation and speciation is one key components understanding evolutionary mechanisms behind biological diversification. Hybrid zones provide a unique opportunity to use admixture identify loci contributing partial reproductive barriers between taxa. Many studies have focused on temporal dynamics hybrid zones, but geographical variation that span distinct ecological contexts has received less attention. We address this knowledge gap by analyzing hybridization introgression black-capped Carolina chickadees two geographically remote transects across their extensive zone, located eastern central North America. Previous demonstrated zone moving northward as result climate change staying consistently narrow due selection against hybrids. In addition, ~5× slower America compared more regions, reflecting continent-wide rate change. whole genome sequencing 259 individuals assess whether movement reflected patterns introgression, which genes genomic regions show restricted contexts. Our results highlight substantial similarities reveal large Z-linked chromosomal rearrangements generate measurable differences degree gene flow transects. further simulations analyses climatic data examine potential factors continental-scale nuances pressures. discuss our findings context importance sex chromosome inversions other species.
