Abstract Our urban systems and their underlying sub-systems are designed to deliver only a narrow set of human-centered services, with little or no accounting understanding how actions undercut the resilience social-ecological-technological (SETS). Embracing SETS perspective creates opportunities for novel approaches adaptation transformation in complex environments. We: i) frame through shift from control entanglement, ii) position thinking as sensemaking create repertoires responses commensurate environmental complexity (i.e., requisite complexity), iii) describe modes system structures functions basic tenets build complexity. is an undertaking reflexively bring sustained adaptation, anticipatory futures, loose-fit design, co-governance into organizational decision-making help reimagine institutional processes entangled SETS.

Abstract The world has become urban; cities increasingly shape our worldviews, relation to other species, and the large-scale, long-term decisions we make. Cities are nature, but they need align better with ecosystems avoid accelerating climate change loss of biodiversity. We a science guide urban development across diverse realities global cities. This can be met, in part, by shifts ecology its linkages related sciences. perspective is “synthesis syntheses”, consolidating ideas from articles Special Section. It re-examines role ecology, explores integration disciplines that study conclude summarizing next steps ongoing shift which fast becoming an integral part studies.

Interdisciplinary teams skilled in Aristotle's three knowledge forms, phronesis, episteme, techne, are essential for dealing with complex challenges future. As sectors transition to new concepts, risks exist unhinged paradoxes, i.e., unforeseen consequences. This is particularly relevant industries infrastructures, such as data centers (DCs). paper presents a conceptual roadmap consisting of four interconnected phases integrating energy efficiency concepts DCs, focus on avoiding paradoxes. The creation process during the roadmapping underscores importance from (1) acknowledgement an external threat, (2) inclusion interdisciplinary team, and (3) regular project meetings facilitate collaborative environment. Additionally, insights gained this research extend beyond DCs can be applied other working towards increased efficiency.

Objective: The Sunter River basin faces significant challenges related to flooding and water scarcity, driven by broken embankments high rainfall intensity. This study aims design an adaptive management system that mitigates flood risks during the rainy season while conserving rainwater for use dry season. Method: research employs area calculation using Polygon Thiessen method analyze distribution. Rainfall data with 90% reliability is processed F.J. Mock method, Mononobe theory applied determine proposes hybrid infrastructure integrates harvesting (RwH), green roofs (GRo), infiltration trenches (ITre), ground reservoirs manage conserve resources effectively. Results Discussion: analysis indicates can harvest approximately 401,345 m³ of annually. trench designed runoff from River’s drainage channel, a capacity 143,259 m³/s, based on 5-year return period. dimensions are 2.5 meters in depth 3 width. Rainwater storage RwH GRo fiberglass reinforced panel tanks modular knock-down 1m x 1m, slab structures C-channel plates. strategically constructed over optimize land mitigate flooding. Research Implications: proposed offers sustainable solution address issues urban areas, reducing risk enhancing availability periods. model be adapted replicated other flood-prone water-scarce regions, contributing improved resilience against climate variability. Originality/Value: presents innovative approach integrating multiple techniques into single system. By addressing both scarcity through design, provides novel contribution practices region.
