Abstract In response to the climate crisis, there has been much focus on climate-smart agriculture (CSA); namely, technologies and practices that enhance adaptation, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contribute food security; so-called triple win. Success tended be measured in terms of number farmers adopting CSA with less given impacts especially human development. can inadvertently lead ‘maladaptation’ whereby interventions reinforce existing vulnerabilities either by benefitting powerful elites or transferring risks exposure between groups. Despite a broad consensus on sustainability, conflicts are increasingly prevalent in sustainability transitions. Although these significantly influence transition dynamics and socio-ecological futures, the role of transitions remains insufficiently addressed. This paper aims to elucidate contested by merging political ecology's emphasis conflicts, nature, power, justice with Gramscian hegemony theory. The integrated framework ecology enables analysis as struggles for terrain society-nature relations amid ecological crises. Sustainability transformations are considered to provide pathways solve current wicked problems, although empirical approaches assess their actual transformative potential still limited. In this study, we analyse a diverse set of 129 sustainability innovations in two Biosphere Reserves Germany and France (Schorfheide-Chorin Fontainebleau-Gâtinais), based on an analytical framework that characterises through actors, processes outcomes. With hierarchical cluster analysis conducted innovation outcomes, identify six archetypes: Participative Transformation Governance, New Sectors for Social-ecological Transformations, Social Sustainable Entrepreneurs, Innovations, Service Innovations Technological Efficiency Innovations. The most archetype, targets both shallow deep leverage points, while implementing amplifying strategies enhance impacts. least archetypes, e.g. target points lack strategies. Our archetype approach thus proves suitable capturing range characterising Synergies between archetypes could be identified further research should elaborate the bridging role best use synergies processes.

Abstract Biodiversity experts now widely acknowledge that transformative change is best supported through transdisciplinary collaborations. Yet, such collaborations rarely successfully occur in major biodiversity research institutions and those do achieve the paradigmatic effects they aim to deliver. To gain some insight into this global phenomenon, we surveyed Swiss-based researchers non-academic stakeholders addressing biodiversity. In article, connect our findings patterns initiatives (TTCIs) heuristically divide collaboration barriers two categories: lack of resources vital functional elements. Two themes emerged from were continued difficulties with (1) establishing a common ‘language’, understanding, goals, (2) meaningful pluralization knowledge aimed at loss. The former cited literature as contributing failure TTCIs form incoherent problem-framing, while latter often identified structural (e.g., shifts) completed initiatives. Another theme reflected TTCI was limited time. Moreover, based on own extensive inter- experience, agree other there persistent understanding potential contributions critical social science (CSS) TTCIs. We thus argue enhancing resource availability for TTCIs, especially tools improving CSS literacy, could save time support both problem-framing alignment delivery structural/paradigmatic changes aspire to.
