Adaptation to climate change is a social–ecological process: it not solely result of natural processes or human decisions but emerges from multiple relations within social systems, ecological systems and between them. We propose novel analytical framework evaluate in nature-based adaptation, encompassing (people–people), (nature–nature) (people–nature) relations. Applying this 25 case studies, we analyse the associations among these identify archetypes adaptation. Our findings revealed that adaptation actions with more people–nature mobilize identified four archetypes, distinct modes along gradient interaction scores, summarized as: (i) nature control; (ii) biodiversity-based; (iii) ecosystem services-based; (iv) integrated approaches. This study contributes nuanced understanding highlighting importance integrating diverse across systems. offer valuable insights for informing design implementation strategies policies. article part discussion meeting issue ‘Bending curve towards recovery: building on Georgina Mace's legacy biodiverse future’.

Values have been recognized as critical leverage points for sustainability transformations. However, there is limited evidence unpacking which types of values are associated with specific sustainable and unsustainable futures, described by future scenarios other futures-related works. This paper builds on a review 460 scenarios, visions, works in the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform Biodiversity Ecosystem Services Assessment, synthesizing from academia, private sector, governmental non-governmental strategies, science-policy reports, arts-based evidence, to identify nature that underlie different archetypes future. The results demonstrate futures related dystopian scenario such Regional Competition, Inequality, Breakdown mostly underpinned deeply individualistic materialistic values. In contrast, more just outcomes, Global Sustainable Development Sustainability, tend be balanced combination plural nature, dominant focus nature's contribution societal (as opposed individual) aspects well-being. Furthermore, identifies research gaps illustrates key importance acknowledging not only people's directly instrumental, intrinsic, relational human-nature relationships, but also broad worldviews affect interactions between society, resulting impacts Nature's Contributions People opportunities good quality life.

Abstract Around the world, people express a variety of values nature based on how they relate and interact with it. These nature, broadly classified as instrumental, intrinsic, relational values, underlie environmental policy decision‐making processes. In this paper, our aim was to assess that are expressed in national documents. We assessed National Biodiversity Strategies Action Plans (NBSAPs), key framework for biodiversity conservation, from 11 countries, representing five regional United Nations groups. used qualitative content analysis identify value orientation statements NBSAPs main themes under each. Across NBSAPs, unspecified were most common (40%), followed by instrumental (38%), intrinsic (14%) (9%) statements. identified follows: (1) sustainability, (2) natural resources (3) ecosystem services. Environmental discourse frequently understands the values of nature as being instrumental, intrinsic, or relational and measured in biophysical, sociocultural, monetary terms. Yet these specific value indicators are underpinned by worldviews, knowledge systems, broad that orient people towards different ways can be shared (or diverge) across spatio-temporal social scales. The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Values Assessment emphasized need for decision-making to embrace a plural-values approach encompasses diverse meanings catalyze outcomes based sustainability-aligned like care, unity, reciprocity, justice. Navigating also highlights salience religion its complexity real-world scenarios force shapes how conceive nature. For example, proposed modes plural-value deliberation reform institutions shift norms toward justice sustainability able bridge sacred–secular policy divides. This article evaluates interacts with nature's building upon reviews conducted IPBES Assessment. We present conceptualizations explore relate various understandings social-ecological change. Further, we delineate three interrelated forms agency: personal, social, more-than-human processes. Upon this foundation, discuss better engage environmental research, considering four mobilizing values: (1) enabling, (2) including, (3) reflecting, (4) shifting two analytical axes regarding religion's scale (individual versus collective) dynamic continuum (religion stable changeable). Our assessment provides conceptual practical tools help consider processes practices shape, reinforce, impede more inclusive effective conservation decision-making.
