Introduction: Burgeoning research has demonstrated that self-reports of posttraumatic growth assess perceived (PPTG), which should be disambiguated from genuine growth. One possible reason trauma survivors report PPTG is embedded cultural expectations individuals grow adverse events. Contributing to this expectation are popular hero's journey stories in a protagonist overcomes events, transforming the into hero, mimic Methods: In two experiments, we experimentally tested whether priming participants with trauma-related via movies would result subsequent increases PPTG. A pilot study confirmed our selection and control movies. Experiment 1, 669 were primed either movie or movie, then subsequently reported for their own most distressing event. Results: Results revealed significantly higher levels This effect was qualified by an interaction such high identification protagonist, experimental prime led increased PPTG; low decreased 2 replicated online community sample MTURK. Discussion: Our results provide evidence can manipulated primes underscore role expectations. Specifically, inspire some, but discourage others.
