How to model hallucinations in mice There has not been enough progress our understanding of the basic mechanisms underlying psychosis. Studying psychotic disorders animal models is difficult because diagnosis relies on self-reported symptoms that can only be assessed humans. Schmack et al. developed a paradigm probe and rigorously measure experimentally controlled rodents (see Perspective by Matamales). Using dopamine-sensor measurements circuit pharmacological manipulations, they demonstrated brain link between excessive dopamine hallucination-like experience. This could potentially useful as translational common described various psychiatric disorders. It may also help development new therapeutic approaches based anatomically selective modulation function. Science , this issue p. eabf4740 ; see 33

Significance Recent computational models propose that our sense of confidence in a choice reflects an estimate the probability is correct. However, it has proven difficult to experimentally separate decision from its component parts, such as certainty about perceptual evidence or requirements. We have devised task dissociate these quantities and isolate distinct encoding medial prefrontal cortex human brain. show activity this area not only tracks expected performance on task, but also related both within-subject between-subject variation subjective confidence. Our study illuminates why dysfunctional often emerges following damage cortex.

Learning to predict rewards based on environmental cues is essential for survival. It believed that animals learn by updating predictions whenever the outcome deviates from expectations, and such reward prediction errors (RPEs) are signaled mesolimbic dopamine system-a key controller of learning. However, instead learning prospective RPEs, can infer retrospective cause rewards. Hence, whether conveys a causal associative signal sometimes resembles RPE remains unknown. We developed an algorithm found release associations but not RPE, thereby challenging dominant theory Our results reshape conceptual biological framework

Determining the psychological, computational, and neural bases of confidence uncertainty holds promise for understanding foundational aspects human metacognition. While a neuroscience has focused on mechanisms underpinning subpersonal phenomena such as representations in visual or motor system, metacognition research been concerned with personal-level beliefs knowledge about self-performance. I provide road map bridging this divide by focusing particular class computation: propositional one's own (hypothetical) decisions actions. Propositional is informed observer's models world their cognitive which may be more less accurate—thus explaining why metacognitive judgments are inferential sometimes diverge from task performance. Disparate findings basis performance monitoring integrated into common framework, new locus action interventions developed.
