The continuous decline of global biodiversity highlights the need for expansion and improved performance protected areas (PAs) to achieve Post-2020 Biodiversity Targets 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. China proposed establishment a national park (NP) system carried out transformative explorations in 10 pilot NPs, however, it is unclear what extent NPs represent China's resolve management issues. To answer this question, we assessed by analyzing representativeness across typical ecosystems, priority areas, ecosystem services, effectiveness reorganizing existing PAs improving intensity man-land relationships. We found that achieved through range optimization, institution streamlining, cohesive management. Compared with PAs, area key services increased 59.6%, 54.1% on average, respectively, similar land cost overall. integrated 142 seven categories. expanded 19.4%, under strict protection 42.1%. A comparative analysis of protected area expansion strategies for biodiversity and ecosystem services: a case study of Hainan Island DOI Creative Commons

Introduction The allocation of limited resources to simultaneously protect biodiversity and provide ecosystem services (ESs) is a critical global challenge in achieving the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. One common strategy for this expand existing protected areas (PAs), but efficiency different expansion methods ESs remains unknown. Methods This study investigated two strategies, preserving PAs (“locking”) versus reassessing their boundaries (“unlocking”), evaluate effectiveness ES targets. used Marxan, spatial modeling tool, assess strategies on Hainan Island China. Results discussion current system, which encompasses 8.82% island, inadequate protecting target levels ES. We experimented with expanding 15% using both strategies. results revealed that, compared “unlocking” strategy, “locking” favored protection (66.49% vs 86.84%), did so at expense conservation. In contrast, required larger area led increased habitat fragmentation wtih approach.
