Abstract
Recent
animal
research
has
revealed
the
intricate
dynamics
of
arousal
levels
that
are
important
for
maintaining
proper
sleep
resilience
and
memory
consolidation.
In
humans,
changes
in
level
believed
to
be
a
determining
characteristic
healthy
pathological
but
tracking
fluctuations
been
methodologically
challenging.
Here
we
measured
pupil
size,
an
established
indicator
levels,
by
safely
taping
right
eye
open
during
overnight
tested
whether
size
affects
cortical
response
auditory
stimulation.
We
show
change
as
function
events
across
different
temporal
scales.

Sleepwalking
and
related
parasomnias
result
from
incomplete
awakenings
out
of
non-rapid
eye
movement
sleep.
Behavioral
episodes
can
occur
without
consciousness
or
recollection,

relation

dream-like

for
these
differences

we
recorded
parasomnia
with
high-density
electroencephalography

The
processing
of
sensory
information,
even
at
early
stages,
is
influenced
by
the
internal
state
animal.
Internal
states,
such
as
arousal,
are
often
characterized
relating
neural
activity
to
a
single
“level”
defined
behavioral
indicator
pupil
size.
In
this
study,
we
expand
understanding
arousal-related
modulations
in
systems
uncovering
multiple
timescales
dynamics
and
their
relationship
activity.
Specifically,
observed
robust
coupling
between
spiking
mouse
dorsolateral
geniculate
nucleus
(dLGN)
thalamus
across
spanning
few
seconds
several
minutes.
Throughout
all
these
timescales,

distinct
modes—individual
tonic
spikes
tightly
clustered
bursts
spikes—preferred
opposite
phases
dynamics.
This
multi-scale
reveals
from
those
captured
size
per
se,
locomotion,
eye
movements.
Furthermore,
persisted
during
viewing
naturalistic
movie,
where
it
contributed
differences
encoding
visual
information.
We
conclude
that
dLGN
under
simultaneous
influence
processes
associated
with
occurring
over
broad
range
timescales.

Abstract
Noradrenaline
(NA)
release
from
the
locus
coeruleus
(LC)
changes
activity
and
connectivity
in
neuronal
networks
across
brain,
modulating
multiple
behavioral
states.
NA
is
mediated
by
both
tonic
burst-like
LC
activity.
However,
it
unknown
whether
functional
target
areas
depend
on
these
firing
patterns.
Using
optogenetics,
photometry,
electrophysiology
magnetic
resonance
imaging
mice,
we
show
that
patterns
elicit
brain
responses
hinge
their
distinct
dynamics.
During
moderate
activation,
engages
regions
associated
with
associative
processing,
while
stimulation
biases
toward
sensory
processing.
These
activation
locally
couple
increased
astrocytic
inhibitory
change
brain’s
topological
configuration
line
hierarchical
organization
of
cerebral
cortex.
Together,
findings
reveal
how
LC–NA
system
achieves
a
nuanced
regulation
global
circuit
operations.
