Abstract Recent animal research has revealed the intricate dynamics of arousal levels that are important for maintaining proper sleep resilience and memory consolidation. In humans, changes in level believed to be a determining characteristic healthy pathological but tracking fluctuations been methodologically challenging. Here we measured pupil size, an established indicator levels, by safely taping right eye open during overnight tested whether size affects cortical response auditory stimulation. We show change as function events across different temporal scales. particular, our results inversely related occurrence spindle clusters, marker resilience. Additionally, found prior stimulation influence evoked response, most notably delta power, several restorative regenerative functions sleep. Recording provides insights into interplay between oscillations.

Sleepwalking and related parasomnias result from incomplete awakenings out of non-rapid eye movement sleep. Behavioral episodes can occur without consciousness or recollection, in relation to dream-like experiences. To understand what accounts for these differences recall, here we recorded parasomnia with high-density electroencephalography (EEG) interviewed participants immediately afterward about their Compared reports no experience (19%), conscious (56%) were preceded by high-amplitude EEG slow waves anterior cortical regions activation posterior regions, similar previously described correlates dreaming. Recall the content (56%), compared recall (25%), was associated higher right medial temporal region before onset. Our work suggests that experiences are those reported dreams may thus reflect core physiological processes involved sleep consciousness.

The processing of sensory information, even at early stages, is influenced by the internal state animal. Internal states, such as arousal, are often characterized relating neural activity to a single “level” defined behavioral indicator pupil size. In this study, we expand understanding arousal-related modulations in systems uncovering multiple timescales dynamics and their relationship activity. Specifically, observed robust coupling between spiking mouse dorsolateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) thalamus across spanning few seconds several minutes. Throughout all these timescales, 2 distinct modes—individual tonic spikes tightly clustered bursts spikes—preferred opposite phases dynamics. This multi-scale reveals from those captured size per se, locomotion, eye movements. Furthermore, persisted during viewing naturalistic movie, where it contributed differences encoding visual information. We conclude that dLGN under simultaneous influence processes associated with occurring over broad range timescales.

Abstract Noradrenaline (NA) release from the locus coeruleus (LC) changes activity and connectivity in neuronal networks across brain, modulating multiple behavioral states. NA is mediated by both tonic burst-like LC activity. However, it unknown whether functional target areas depend on these firing patterns. Using optogenetics, photometry, electrophysiology magnetic resonance imaging mice, we show that patterns elicit brain responses hinge their distinct dynamics. During moderate activation, engages regions associated with associative processing, while stimulation biases toward sensory processing. These activation locally couple increased astrocytic inhibitory change brain’s topological configuration line hierarchical organization of cerebral cortex. Together, findings reveal how LC–NA system achieves a nuanced regulation global circuit operations.
