Abstract West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging mosquito-borne pathogen in Europe where it represents a new public health threat. While climate change has been cited as potential driver of its spatial expansion on the continent, formal evaluation this causal relationship lacking. Here, we investigate extent to which WNV can be attributed while accounting for other direct human influences such land-use and population changes. To end, trained ecological niche models predict risk local circulation leading cases then unravel isolated effect by comparing factual simulations counterfactual based same environmental changes but long-term trends have removed. Our findings demonstrate notable increase area ecologically suitable during period 1901–2019, whereas remains largely unchanged no-climate-change counterfactual. We show that drastic at exposure partly due historical density, also critical behind heightened Europe.

Mosquitoes are vectors for emerging and re-emerging infectious viral diseases of humans, livestock other animals. In addition to these arthropod-borne (arbo)viruses, mosquitoes host an array insect-specific viruses, collectively referred as the mosquito virome. Mapping virome understanding if how its composition modulates arbovirus transmission is critical understand arboviral disease emergence outbreak dynamics. recent years, next-generation sequencing well PCR culture-based methods have been extensively used identify mosquito-associated providing insights into virus ecology evolution. Until now, large amount data, specifically those acquired by metagenomic sequencing, has not comprehensively integrated. Biological invasions have increased significantly with the tremendous growth of international trade and transport. Hematophagous arthropods can be vectors infectious potentially lethal pathogens parasites, thus constituting a growing threat to humans-especially when associated biological invasions. Abstract Background Culex pipiens sensu stricto (s.s.) is considered the primary vector of Usutu virus and West Nile virus, consists two morphologically identical but behaviourally distinct biotypes ( Cx. biotype molestus) their hybrids. Both are expected to differ in feeding behaviour, pipiens/molestus hybrids presumed display intermediate behaviour. However, evidence for patterns scarce, date no studies have related differences host abundance. Methods Mosquitoes were collected using CO 2 -baited traps. We blood-engorged pipiens/torrentium specimens from 12 contrasting urban sites, namely six city parks residential areas. Blood engorged mosquitoes identified species biotype/hybrid level via real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). performed blood meal analysis PCR Sanger sequencing. Additionally, avian communities surveyed vocal sounds and/or visual observation. Results selected 64 which we successfully determined origin 55 specimens. Of these, 38 belonged , 14 identity three could not be determined. No molestus or torrentium collected. observed between across different habitats. Avian community composition differed areas, whereas overall abundance did habitat types. Conclusions Our results show following: (1) s.s. regardless whether individuals as (2) detected availability (3) that both types, fed on mammalian hosts. This underscores potential role arbovirus transmission Graphical

Abstract Background Mosquitoes of the Culex pipiens complex are widely distributed vectors for several arboviruses affecting humans. Consequently, their populations have long been controlled using insecticides, in response to which different resistance mechanisms selected. Moreover, ecological preferences and broad adaptability allow C. mosquitoes breed highly polluted water bodies where they exposed many residuals from anthropogenic activities. It has observed mosquito species that anthropization (in particular urbanization agricultural lands) can lead increased exposure insecticides thus resistance. The main objective present study was investigate whether how and/or lands had a similar impact on Morocco. Methods Breeding sites were sampled along transects four regions around major Moroccan cities, following gradients decreasing anthropization. imprint activities evaluated each site as percentage areas classified three categories: urban, natural. We then assessed frequencies known alleles these samples followed dynamics five urban breeding over 4 years. Results distribution revealed strong anthropization, both urbanized lands, although between mutations regions; we did not find any clear trend during survey. Conclusions Our provides further evidence role anthropic selection maintenance selected mosquitoes. consequences worrying this could decrease vector control capacities result epizootic epidemic outbreaks. concerted integrated disease strategies must be designed include better management regarding our Graphical

Viral infections caused by viruses from the family Flaviviridae such as Zika (ZIKV), Dengue (DENV), yellow fever (YFV), tick-borne encephalitis (TBEV), West Nile (WNV), and Usutu (USUV) are some of most challenging diseases for recognition in clinical diagnostics epidemiological tracking thanks to their short viremia, non-specific symptoms, high cross-reactivity observed laboratory techniques. In Central Europe, relevant endemic flaviviruses mosquito-borne WNV USUV, TBEV. All three have been recognised be responsible human neuroinvasive diseases. Moreover, they interrupting blood transplantation safety processes, when great efforts made save a patient’s life could defeated acquired infection donors. Due trend changing distribution abundance vectors influenced global change, co-circulation WNV, TBEV can same area. this perspective, we discuss problems flavivirus epidemiology monitoring Slovakia model area where zone has recently detected. The nudiviruses (family: Nudiviridae) are large double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) viruses that infect insects and crustaceans, have most recently been identified from ectoparasitic members (fleas lice). This virus family was created in 2014 has since expanded via the discovery of multiple novel viral candidates or accepted members, sparking need for a new taxonomic evolutionary overview. Using current information (including data public databases), we construct comprehensive phylogeny, encompassing 49 different nudiviruses. We use this phylogeny to propose structure Nudiviridae by suggesting two genera (Zetanudivirus Etanudivirus), lice. detail emerging relationships between their hosts, considering history ecological role.
