Abstract Dispersal of reproductive propagules determines recruitment patterns and connectivity among populations can influence how respond to major disturbance events. distributions depend on propagule release strategies. For instance, the bull kelp, Nereocystis luetkeana , (spores) from two heights in water column (“bimodal release”): at surface, directly tissues (sori) kelp's blades, near seafloor after sori abscise sink through column. We know little dispersal distributions, which could recovery restoration. Here, we quantify bimodal spore affect outcomes based numerical model specifically designed for . As an annual species, facilitate local regeneration adults source forest while also supporting multiple forests broader metapopulations. To leverage this pattern restoration management, directing resources toward strategically located focal seed other ones amplify scale recovery.

Macroalgae provide food and habitat to a diversity of organisms in marine systems, so structural damage breakage thallus tissue can have important ecological consequences for the composition dynamics communities. Common sources macroalgal include by hydrodynamic forces imposed ambient water currents waves, consumption herbivores, injuries due epibionts. Many species biomechanical designs that minimize these sources, such as flexibly reconfiguring into streamlined shapes flow, having either strong or extensible tissues are tough, chemical morphological defenses against herbivores If occurs, some macroalgae properties prevent cracks from propagating facilitate certain places, allowing remainder survive. In contrast mechanisms control, use aid dispersal, while others simply complete their reproduction prior seasonally-predictable periods (e.g., storm seasons). Once variety responses, including increasing strength, thickening support structures, altering shape. Thus, myriad strategies preventing, controlling, responding occur throughout lives.

Dinitrogen (N2) fixation represents a key source of reactive nitrogen in marine ecosystems. While the process has been rather well-explored low latitudes Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, other higher latitude regions particularly Indian Ocean have chronically overlooked. Here, we characterize N2 diazotroph community composition across nutrient trace metals gradients spanning multifrontal system separating oligotrophic waters subtropical gyre from high chlorophyll Southern Ocean. We found sharp contrasting distribution groups frontal system. Notably, cyanobacterial diazotrophs dominated north fronts, driving rates (up to 13.96 nmol N l-1 d-1) with notable peaks near South African coast. fronts non-cyanobacterial prevailed without significant activity being detected. Our results provide new crucial insights into diazotrophy Ocean, which should contribute improved climate model parameterization enhanced constraints on global net primary productivity projections.

Abstract The Peruvian Province, from 6° S in Peru to 42° Chile, is a highly productive coastal marine region whose biology and fossil record have long been studied separately but never integrated.
