What determines where to move the eyes? We recently showed that pupil size, a well-established marker of effort, also reflects effort associated with making saccade (‘saccade costs’). Here, we demonstrate costs critically drive selection: when choosing between any two directions, least costly direction was consistently preferred. Strikingly, this principle even held during search in natural scenes additional experiments. When increasing cognitive demand experimentally through an auditory counting task, participants made fewer saccades and especially cut directions. This suggests eye-movement system other operations consume similar resources are flexibly allocated among each as changes. Together, argue behavior is tuned adaptively minimize saccade-inherent effort.

Abstract Decision fatigue is the idea that making decisions mentally demanding and eventually leads to deteriorated decision quality. Many studies report results appear consistent with fatigue. However, most of this evidence comes from observed sequential patterns using retrospective designs, without preregistration or external validation low precision in how operationalized. Here we conducted an empirical test large-scale, high-resolution data on healthcare professionals’ medical judgments at a national telephone triage advice service. This suitable setting for testing because work both hard repetitive, yet qualified, variation scheduling produced where level could be regarded as near random some segments data. We hypothesized increased use heuristics, more specifically convergence toward personal defaults case judgments, higher assigned urgency ratings tested these hypotheses one-sided Bayes Factors computed underlying Bayesian generalized mixed models intercepts. The consistently showed relative support statistical null hypothesis no difference decision-making depending (BF 0+ > 22 all main tests). thus found Whereas don’t preclude existence weaker nuanced version context-specific effects, they cast serious doubt relevance domain general effect elsewhere.

ABSTRACT Empirical studies have shown immediate detrimental effects of TV viewing on children's executive functions (EFs). Existing theories proposed that such depletion could occur due to fantastical cartoons triggering an attention bias towards salient features the stimuli (e.g., stimulus‐driven exogenous attention). However, a co‐occurrence visual known drive exogenously in means it is unclear which aspect content problematic. In present study, we matched clips saliency isolate and test short‐term impact content. Specifically, tested (1) performance inhibitory control (IC) task (a gaze‐contingent anti‐saccade task) as measure EF depletion, whilst 36 toddlers (18 months) viewed with without events (7‐min duration), (2) whether differences IC are associated increased attention. Results confirmed effect toddlers’ endogenous (indexed by behaviours), less able inhibit looks distractor make anticipatory target. fixation durations (FDs) during cartoon speed orienting did not differ between two conditions, suggesting no driven These results point mechanisms, may arisen from cognitive processing difficulties.

When making decisions, humans are susceptible to all sorts of biases, relative rational norms. An important factor is incidental changes in affective states, such as variations mood between happiness and sadness. We previously developed a computational model, which affects choice by forming predisposition face costs seek more rewards. Here, we generalized this theory account for how specific inductions sadness affect different types economic decisions involving tradeoff (risk, delay, effort) benefits (financial rewards). Across exploratory confirmatory studies (N = 94), observed consistent bias exerted transitory whether they were assessed through self-reports (rated minus sadness) or inferred from physiological measures (valence facial expression times intensity autonomous arousal). This was best explained our with mood-scaled bonus added the value rewarded but costly option, irrespective cost type delay effort). Additionally, gaze tracking during decision confirmed that driven an early preference mood-congruent option. Together, these results demonstrate feasibility predicting irrational choices objective states.
