Burnout is becoming a global pandemic jeopardizing brain health, with huge impact on quality of life, available workforce, and the economy. Knowledge burnout cognition, physiology, physical activity (PA) in daily life allows for an improved understanding health consequences everyday ramifications burnout. Twenty-eight volunteers participated three-day recording physiology PA, including heart rate (HR) steps, wearable device. They filled questionnaires screening (BBI-15), depression (BDI), executive functions (EFs) (BRIEF-A). The subjects had more challenges EFs, higher average HRs lower numbers steps than those without it. BBI-15 scores correlated positively BDI BRIEF-A indices negatively awake HR variability (HRV) steps. metacognition index HRV. In conclusion, linked compromised EFs along alterations cardiac PA life. Such may be easily detected devices, opening possibilities novel biomarkers other neuropsychiatric disorders. We suggest that are intimately intertwined interacts each them bidirectionally.

Increasing time spent on the task (i.e., time-on-task (ToT) effect) often results in mental fatigue. Typical effects of ToT are decreasing levels task-related motivation and deterioration cognitive performance. However, a massive body research indicates that detrimental can be reversed by extrinsic motivators, for example, providing rewards to fatigued participants. Although several attempts have been made identify brain areas involved fatigue related reward processing, neural correlates still less understood. In this study, we used psychomotor vigilance induce blood oxygen-level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging investigate effect extra monetary after induction) healthy young sample. What determines where to move the eyes? We recently showed that pupil size, a marker of noradrenaline release, reflects effort associated with making saccade (’saccade costs’). Here we demonstrate costs critically drive selection: when choosing between any two directions, least costly direction was consistently preferred. Strikingly, this principle even held during search in natural scenes additional experiments. When increasing cognitive demand experimentally through an auditory counting task, participants made fewer saccades and especially cut directions. This suggests eye-movement system other operations consume similar resources are flexibly allocated among each as changes. Together, argue behavior is tuned adaptively minimize saccade-inherent effort.

Feelings of cognitive fatigue emerge through repeated mental exertion and are ubiquitous in our daily lives. However, there is a limited understanding the neurobiological mechanisms underlying influence on decisions to exert. We use functional magnetic resonance imaging examine brain activity while participants make choices exert effort for reward, before after bouts fatiguing exertion. found that when became cognitively fatigued, they were more likely choose forgo higher levels reward required effort. describe mechanism by which signals related dlPFC value computations, instantiated insula, thereby influencing an individual's fatigued. Our results suggest plays critical role provides mechanistic link information about state shapes effort-based choice.
