Plants and insects are the most diverse ecologically important organisms in terrestrial biosphere. Their interactions also among richest biotic relationships, offer significant insights into evolution of ecosystem complexity through geological record. This investigation late Rhaetian Xujiahe earliest Jurassic Zhenzhuchong floral assemblages provides first data on foliar herbivory generated by arthropods across Triassic–Jurassic transition eastern Tethys (East Asia) region. The damage types from two fossil collectively attributed to seven functional feeding egg-laying categories (i.e., hole feeding, margin surface skeletonization, piercing sucking, oviposition, galling). Most strategies spread major plant groups persist boundary, with exception skeletonization (a category external foliage feeding), which was restricted latest Triassic within dipteridacean ferns. survey reveals that respective frequency diversity between plants prior following end-Triassic mass extinction event almost same, despite a substantial turnover components. suggest insect herbivores were largely able transfer alternative (but commonly related) during dramatic floristic environmental changes at end Triassic. Sporadic occurrences modifications, such as marginal cusps pinnules Pterophyllum prominent ridges rachises some ferns bennettites interpreted adaptations for defense against herbivores. A few differences taxonomic composition representation flora more likely be related collection preservational biases rather than reflecting palaeoecological changes. We encourage further investigations exploring distribution floras other palaeolatitudinal zones spanning events develop better understanding responses crises Earth’s history.

Krameropteris is an extinct fern genus found in mid-Cretaceous Myanmar amber, assigned to the Dennstaedtiaceae, with only one previously described species, i.e., K. resinatus. This study describes a new calophyllum, also preserved amber. The species characterized by branched venation free veinlets terminating thickened tips, multicellular hairs along pinnule margins, and submarginal or medial exindusiate sori at ends of veinlets. Its sporangia are polypod-type, producing trilete spores. represents second record early-diverging Dennstaedtiaceae lineage calophyllum differs from resinatus its epidermal characteristics spore morphology, latter exhibiting conspicuously ornamented perine, covered sparse tubercles ridges. provides insights into potential herbivory interactions relationship between polypod ferns smallest mite ever recorded. These findings suggest that exhibited species-level diversity mid-Cretaceous, indicating earlier origin family, potentially as early Early Jurassic, consistent recent DNA-based time divergence estimates.

Eggs are one of the least understood life stages insects, and poorly represented in fossil record. Using microtomography, we studied an enigmatic egg clutch a presumed entomological affinity from Oligocene Turtle Cove Member, John Day Formation, National Park Service-administered lands Fossil Beds Monument, Oregon. A highly organized mass comprising large size approximately 50 slightly curved ellipsoidal eggs arranged radially several planes is preserved, enclosed disc-shaped layer cemented compacted soil particles. Based on morphology overall structure eggs, conclude that specimen represents fossilized underground ootheca grasshoppers locusts (Orthoptera: Caelifera), also known as pod. This likely oldest first unambiguous evidence grasshopper We describe Subterroothecichnus radialis igen. et isp. nov. Curvellipsoentomoolithus laddi oogen. oosp. nov., representing pod respectively. advocate for adopting ootaxonomy studying affinities, widely practiced with amniotic eggs. An additional 26 individual clustered C. collected throughout A–H subunits Member suggest stable presence fauna, discuss paleoecological implications. Oothecae have convergently evolved times insect groups; this ovipositional strategy contributed to fossilization lesser-known ontogenetic stage, enriching our understanding past life.

The goji fruit fly, Neoceratitis asiatica, is a major pest on the well-known medicinal plant Lycium barbarum. Dissecting molecular mechanisms of oviposition selection N. asiatica regarding host will help to identify new strategies for fly control. However, mechanism chemical communication between and remains unclear. Hence, our study found that young volatiles induced response gravid female asiatica. After was exposed volatiles, expression six chemosensory genes (NasiOBP56h3 OBP99a1 in antennae; OBP99a2, OBP99a3 CSP2 legs; OBP56a ovipositor) significantly upregulated different organs compared with group without odor treatment according transcriptome data. Further results qPCR verification show levels selected after flies were mostly consistent We concluded may be involved recognition by Our preliminarily identifies as key factor behavior which facilitate further studies
