Plant-derived oils provide 20%-35% of dietary calories and are a primary source essential omega-6 (linoleic) omega-3 (α-linolenic) fatty acids. While traditional breeding has significantly increased yields in key oilseed crops like soybean, sunflower, canola, peanut, cottonseed, overall gains have plateaued over the past few decades. Oilseed also experience substantial yield losses both prime marginal agricultural areas due to biotic abiotic stresses shifting agro-climates. Recent genomic, transcriptomic, metabolomics research expanded our understanding genetic physiological control acid biosynthesis composition. Many species inherent stress-combating mechanisms, including transcription factor regulation. Advances genome editing tools CRISPR/Cas9 offer precise modifications, targeting factors binding sites enhance desirable traits, such as nutritional profile chemical composition This review explores application improvement, covering recent progress, challenges, future potential boost oil content. These advancements could play transformative role developing resilient, nutritious crop varieties for sustainable food security changing climate.

Plant diseases caused by pathogens pose significant threats to agricultural productivity and food security worldwide. The traditional approach of relying on chemical pesticides for disease management has proven be unsustainable, emphasizing the urgent need sustainable environmentally friendly alternatives. One promising strategy is enhance plant resistance against through various methods. This review aims unveil explore effective methods stimulating resistance, transforming vulnerable plants into vigilant defenders pathogens. We discuss both conventional innovative approaches, including genetic engineering, induced systemic (ISR), priming, use natural compounds. Furthermore, we analyze underlying mechanisms involved in these methods, highlighting their potential advantages limitations. Through an understanding scientists agronomists can develop novel strategies combat effectively while minimizing environmental impact. Ultimately, this research offers valuable insights harnessing plant’s innate defense paves way practices agriculture.

Wheat is cultivated across diverse global environments, and its productivity significantly impacted by various biotic stresses, most importantly but not limited to rust diseases, Fusarium head blight, wheat blast, powdery mildew. The genetic diversity of modern cultivars has been eroded domestication selection, increasing their vulnerability stress due uniformity. rapid spread new highly virulent aggressive pathogen strains exacerbated this situation. Three strategies can be used for enhancing disease resistance through genome editing: introducing (R) gene-mediated resistance, engineering nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat receptors (NLRs), manipulating susceptibility (S) genes stop pathogens from exploiting these factors support infection. Utilizing R the common strategy traditional breeding approaches, continuous evolution effectors eventually overcome resistance. Moreover, modifying S confer pleiotropic effects that hinder use in agriculture. Enhancing paramount sustainable production food security, tools are great importance research community. application CRISPR-based editing provides promise improve allowing access a broader range solutions beyond random mutagenesis or intraspecific variation, unlocking ways crops, speeding up breeding. Here, we first summarize major context important diseases limitations. Next, turn our attention powerful applications technology creating varieties against diseases.

Genetic diversity is a key factor for plant breeding. The birth of novel genic and genomic variants also crucial adaptation in nature. Therefore, the genomes almost all living organisms possess natural mutagenic mechanisms. Transposable elements (TEs) are major force driving genetic wild plants modern crops. relatively rare TE transposition activity during thousand-year crop domestication process has led to phenotypic many cultivated species. utilization mutagenesis by artificial transient acceleration their controlled mode an attractive foundation type called TE-mediated biological mutagenesis. Here, I focus on TEs as sources breeding discuss existing emerging transgene-free approaches activation plants. Furthermore, review non-randomness insertions genome molecular epigenetic factors involved shaping insertion preferences. Additionally, mechanisms that prevent transpositions germline cells (e.g., meiocytes, pollen, egg embryo cells, shoot apical meristem), thereby reducing chances inheritance. Knowledge these can expand toolbox using gene targeting approaches. Finally, challenges future perspectives populations with induced (iTE collections) discussed.
