Episodic-like memory in non-human animals represents the behavioral characteristics of human episodic memory-the ability to mentally travel backward time "re-live" past experiences. A focus on traditional model species episodic-like may overlook taxa possessing this cognitive and consequently its evolution across species. Experiments conducted wild have potential broaden scope research under natural conditions which they evolved. We combine two distinct yet complementary tasks (the what-where-when incidental encoding paradigms), each targeting a different aspect memory, namely content (what-where-when) process (incidental encoding), comprehensively test abilities wild, free-living, non-caching blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) great (Parus major). Automated feeders with custom-built programs allowed for experimental manipulation spatiotemporal experiences an individual-level basis. In experiment, after learning individualized temporal feeder rules, birds demonstrated their recall "what" (food type), "where" (feeder location), "when" (time since initial visit day) previous foraging showed that were able encode spatial information regarding ("where" test), juveniles, but not adults, also incidentally encoded visual ("which" test). Consequently, study presents multiple lines converging evidence population generalist foragers, suggesting be more taxonomically widespread than previously assumed.

Episodic memory involves the conscious recollection of personally experienced events and when absent, results in profound losses to typical human experience. Over last 2.5 decades, debate surrounding whether episodic is unique humans has seen a lot controversy accordingly received significant research attention. Various behavioural paradigms have been developed test episodic-

For several decades, although studies of rat physiology and behavior have abounded, research on emotions has been limited in scope to fear, anxiety, pain. Converging evidence for the capacity many species share others’ affective states emerged, sparking interest empathic capacities rats. Recent demonstrated that rats are a highly cooperative motivated by distress prosocial actions, such as opening door or pulling chain release trapped conspecifics. ABSTRACT Do animals have episodic memory—the kind of memory which gives us rich details about particular past events—or is this uniquely human? This might look like an empirical question, but attracting increasing philosophical attention. We review relevant behavioural evidence, as well drawing attention to neuroscientific and computational evidence has been less discussed in philosophy. Next, we distinguish evaluate reasons for scepticism animals. In the process, articulate three pressing issues underlying these sceptical arguments, should be focus future work. The Problem Interspecific Variation asks differences between humans animal mean that a variant memory, it different altogether. Abstract Although events are not always known to be important when they occur, people can remember details about such incidentally encoded information using episodic memory. Sheridan et al. (2024) argued that rats replayed memories of in an unexpected assessment In one task, reported the third-last item explicitly list trial-unique odors. a second foraged radial maze absence On critical test, maze, but scented lids covered food. Next, memory odor was assessed. The correctly answered question. Because odors used test were same as those during training, automatically encoding for purpose taking upcoming (stimulus generalization) may have been encouraged. Here, we provided opportunity incidental novel Previously trained with entirely covering High accuracy confronted provides evidence did encode ruling out stimulus generalization. We conclude multiple pieces putatively unimportant information, and later stream needed solve problem.
