The Great Salt Lake (GSL) is the largest saline lake in Western Hemisphere. It supports billion-dollar industries and recreational activities, a vital stopping point for migratory birds. However, little known about spatiotemporal variation of phytoplankton biomass that these resources. Spectral reflectance provided by three remote sensing products was compared relative to their relationship with field measurements chlorophyll (Chl a). MODIS product MCD43A4 500 m spatial resolution best overall ability map daily distribution Chl a. imagery indicated significant a, low concentrations littoral areas high nutrient-rich plume coming out polluted embayment. Seasonal differences showed higher winter but lower summer due heavy brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) grazing pressure. Saline lake desiccation is widespread and typically caused by anthropogenic withdrawals for agricultural, industrial, municipal uses, but its impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions unknown. While dry-flux studies have shown that desiccating waterbodies emit carbon dioxide (CO2) methane (CH4) from exposed sediments, these are often seasonal freshwater systems, limiting their application to chronically saline lakes. We measured CO2 CH4 (April November, 2020) the sediments of Great Salt Lake (Utah, United States), compared them with aquatic estimates determine associated desiccation. In 2020, bed emitted 4.1 million tons CO2eq atmosphere, primarily (94%) as CO2, constituting a ∼7% increase Utah's GHG emissions. As climate change exacerbates drought in arid regions, feedbacks should be considered assessments global trajectories well local reduction efforts.

East African lakes support the food and water security of millions people. Yet, a lack continuous long-term quality data for these waterbodies impedes their sustainable management. While satellite-based retrieval methods have been developed globally, are typically underrepresented in training data, limiting applicability existing to region. Hence, this study aimed (1) assess accuracy newly band algorithms (2) make satellite-derived information easily accessible through Google Earth Engine application (app), named LAndsat QUality tool east (LAQUA). We collated dataset collected situ surface samples from seven develop test Landsat models. Twenty-one published were evaluated compared with linear quadratic regression models, determine most suitable chlorophyll-a, total suspended solids (TSS), Secchi disk depth (SDD) lakes. The three-band algorithm, parameterised using lakes, proved chlorophyll-a (R2 = 0.717, p < 0.001, RMSE 22.917 μg/L), novel index study, Modified Suspended Matter Index (MSMI), was accurate TSS 0.822, 9.006 mg/L), an global model SDD estimation 0.933, 0.073 m). LAQUA app we provides easy access best performing facilitating use management evidence-informed policy making
