Abstract Cells reorganize in space and time to move divide – complex behaviors driven by their internal cytoskeleton. While we have substantial knowledge of the molecular parts rules cytoskeletal assembly, know less about how structures are remodeled, for example interconvert centrioles from ciliary base centrosome. To study this an evolutionary context use chytrid fungus, Rhizoclosmatium globosum , a member zoosporic fungi which cilia, lost other fungal lineages. Chytrids undergo reorganization microtubule cytoskeleton as they cycle zoospore multinucleated coenocyte. We comparative bioinformatics, RNA sequencing, expansion microscopy map over lifecycle. find that when zoospores encyst, cilia retracted into cytoplasm degraded, detach but protected degradation. A shortened proximal centriole then forms mitotic centrosome ultimately elongates form at end cycles, conserved transcriptional program. Thus, structural remodeling is coupled temporally ciliated stages rather than may serve mechanism tune organization meet needs different lifecycle stages.
